Introducing a classic shaker kitchen with a contemporary spin!
The brief for this kitchen was a challenging one. Our clients wanted to create a space that reflected the beauty of their converted school house without is feeling twee or too traditional. It still however needed to be in keeping with the feel of the house.
The original kitchen felt small and rather dark which the exact opposite of the feeling our clients wanted to create.
Our resolution was simple but dramatic. The original low ceiling was removed to expose the beamed vaulted ceiling and a large built-in cupboard housing the boiler was also removed. The back wall was built out by 100mm to accommodate the pipework with the boiler situated in the new dresser cabinet. The effect of vaulting the ceiling was huge and visually increased the size of the room making it feel twice the size.
Underfloor heating removed any unnecessary radiators, freeing up valuable space, combined with insulated board between the rafters make the room a comfortable warm space to spend time in.
To achieve the aesthetic our clients wanted we used a framed painted cabinet with a stopped champfer detail to the door. The cabinetry was painted in shades of Grey with tall and base cabinets in Farrow & Ball Cornforth white, wall cabinets and dressers in Ammonite and the walls in strong white. This limited palette also helped to make the room feel that much bigger.
The dark grey glass reflects light in the room and adds a contemporary feel.
The shaped breakfast bar not only adds a dynamic shape to the room but also allows sitting at differing angles for conversation rather than sitting in a row while still offering views over the beautiful garden.
Gloss black granite worksurfaces and honed marble flooring complete the clean comfortable feel of this beautiful kitchen.

Ourso Designs
This client’s house had great bones to work with, but also had a few things that made their kitchen less functional. Their main issue with the space was that their cooktop was located on the island, and since the island wasn’t very big, it limited the amount of usable counterspace. Also, they had a microwave oven stack that was housed in a massive brick enclosure that also took up a lot of valuable space. In our design, we decided to replace the cooktop and oven with a gas range and relocated it to the back wall on the L. We also move the refrigerator to the wall opposite of the sink to create the perfect working triangle. All of the cabinetry to the right of the range serves as a dry bar with lots of storage including nice display storage for wine. Originally the house had a butler’s pass between the dining room and kitchen. We decided to transform this space by closing it in on both sides and creating a nice walk-in pantry, something the kitchen did not have before! We extended their island and added space for seating on one side. The kitchen has a beautiful vaulted ceiling that we added a beam to across the center. For materials, we chose a white and grey palette with some blue and wood tones. The backsplash is a beautiful marble mosaic with blue and grey. The countertops are luna plena quartzite, and we incorporated a custom wood wrap around the hood to match the beams. We are thrilled with how we were able to help transform this kitchen into a beautiful functional space.
Piperbear Designs
Located in Church Hill, Richmond’s oldest neighborhood, this very early 1900s Victorian had tons of historical details, but the house itself had been neglected (badly!). The home had two major renovation periods – one in 1950’s, and then again in the 1980s’s, which covered over or disrupted the original aesthetics of the house (think open ductwork, framing and drywall obscuring the beautiful mantels and moldings, and the hot water heater taking up valuable kitchen space). Our Piperbear team had to “undo” much before we could tackle the restoration of the historical features, while at the same time modernizing the layout.

We completely remodelled the room to remove a sink which was using up far too much valuable space and built a large walk in wardrobe where the sink was formerly and repositioned the sink behind doors in the previous small wardrobe cupboard. We installed all new flooring and window dressings and all new furniture - turning the position of the bed around to zone the room on the two different levels to sleep and play/work. What a difference a few clever design choices can make!
Chi Renovation & Design
In the heart of Chicago's vibrant West Loop, this transformative renovation reimagined the main level of a distinguished home, meticulously enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The project ambitiously relocated the laundry facilities to the basement and removed the existing pantry, strategically reclaiming valuable square footage to expand the kitchen area. This thoughtful redesign paved the way for a more expansive, state-of-the-art culinary space.
Central to the kitchen's allure is a striking aged brass chandelier, suspended with precision above the island. This elegant fixture not only serves as a luminous focal point but also embodies the sleek and sophisticated design ethos that permeates the entire renovation.
The primary aim of this project was to elevate the home's guest entertaining capabilities, a goal achieved with remarkable success. The guest bathroom received a significant upgrade, adorned with the distinctive charm of Harlequin, a British brand wallpaper, known for its bold and whimsical designs. This choice adds a layer of refined eccentricity and texture to the space, enhancing the guest experience.
Furthering the enhancements, the entryway to the house was also updated, setting a welcoming tone that harmonizes with the overall design narrative. These alterations collectively contribute to a more inviting and functional environment, perfectly suited for hosting and entertaining.
This comprehensive renovation, encompassing design, labor, and materials, represented an investment of just over $160,000. The result is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and strategic planning, culminating in a space that not only meets the contemporary needs of its inhabitants but does so with unmatched elegance and style.

Axis Mundi | Chicago
Packing a lot of function into a small space requires ingenuity and skill, exactly what was needed for this one-bedroom gut in the Meatpacking District. When Axis Mundi was done, all that remained was the expansive arched window. Now one enters onto a pristine white-walled loft warmed by new zebrano plank floors. A new powder room and kitchen are at right. On the left, the lean profile of a folded steel stair cantilevered off the wall allows access to the bedroom above without eating up valuable floor space. Beyond, a living room basks in ample natural light. To allow that light to penetrate to the darkest corners of the bedroom, while also affording the owner privacy, the façade of the master bath, as well as the railing at the edge of the mezzanine space, are sandblasted glass. Finally, colorful furnishings, accessories and photography animate the simply articulated architectural envelope.

Sheffield Sustainable Kitchens
We designed this cosy grey family kitchen with reclaimed timber and elegant brass finishes, to work better with our clients’ style of living. We created this new space by knocking down an internal wall, to greatly improve the flow between the two rooms.
Our clients came to us with the vision of creating a better functioning kitchen with more storage for their growing family. We were challenged to design a more cost-effective space after the clients received some architectural plans which they thought were unnecessary. Storage and open space were at the forefront of this design.
Previously, this space was two rooms, separated by a wall. We knocked through to open up the kitchen and create a more communal family living area. Additionally, we knocked through into the area under the stairs to make room for an integrated fridge freezer.
The kitchen features reclaimed iroko timber throughout. The wood is reclaimed from old school lab benches, with the graffiti sanded away to reveal the beautiful grain underneath. It’s exciting when a kitchen has a story to tell. This unique timber unites the two zones, and is seen in the worktops, homework desk and shelving.
Our clients had two growing children and wanted a space for them to sit and do their homework. As a result of the lack of space in the previous room, we designed a homework bench to fit between two bespoke units. Due to lockdown, the clients children had spent most of the year in the dining room completing their school work. They lacked space and had limited storage for the children’s belongings. By creating a homework bench, we gave the family back their dining area, and the units on either side are valuable storage space. Additionally, the clients are now able to help their children with their work whilst cooking at the same time. This is a hugely important benefit of this multi-functional space.
The beautiful tiled splashback is the focal point of the kitchen. The combination of the teal and vibrant yellow into the muted colour palette brightens the room and ties together all of the brass accessories. Golden tones combined with the dark timber give the kitchen a cosy ambiance, creating a relaxing family space.
The end result is a beautiful new family kitchen-diner. The transformation made by knocking through has been enormous, with the reclaimed timber and elegant brass elements the stars of the kitchen. We hope that it will provide the family with a warm and homely space for many years to come.
BOWA
Through the custom sliding pocket doors is the bar area, which was designed for entertaining guests both in the house and at the pool. The full wall of custom built-ins provides significant storage space and houses another television and media equipment. The built-ins also conceal a hidden Murphy bed, which allows the homeowners to accommodate occasional overnight guests without sacrificing valuable space. Two sets of French doors were added and the patio was remodeled and expanded to improve access to the pool area, and to make a more appropriate exterior statement.
