The client's came to us wanting a design that was going to open up their small backyard and give them somewhere for their family to enjoy and entertain for many years to come.
This project presented many technical challenges due to the levels required to comply with various building regulations. Clever adaptations such privacy screens, floating deck entry and hidden pool gate behind the raised feature wall were all design elements that make this project more suitable to the smaller area.
The main design feature that was a key to the functionality of this pool was the raised infinity edge, with the pool wall designed to comply with current pool barrier standards. With no pool fence between the pool and house the space appears more open with the noise of the water falling over the edge into a carefully concealed balance tank adding a very tranquil ambience to the outdoor area.
With the accompanying fire pit and sitting area, this space not only looks amazing but is functional all year round and the low maintenance fully automated pool cleaning system provides easy operation and maintenance.

The pool construction was part of a major renovation of the property. The core of the home was designed as one seamless indoor-outdoor pavilion with a northerly wall of glass sliding back to the pool and adjacent decking area. The glassed hallway leading to the master bedroom directly abuts a section of the swimming pool – as such, the pool shell was specially engineered and constructed to provide load bearing support for the house.
Betz Pools Limited
With the custom Gunite pool limited to 12’ x 24’, Betz recommended a visual negative edge. Infinity pools are often designed so the surface appears to merge with the background in the distance. This time it was to make the pool seem larger, especially when you are in it, by creating a spacious open feeling along one side.

The steeply sloping lot of this home north of Toronto created structural support issues, so the Gunite pool shell also performs the job of a retaining wall. A 3" tempered glass wall along the deep end provides a "visual" zero edge, while in the shallow end a tanning shelf with umbrella and protective wall provides a wading area for the grand children. The pool's dark gray Armorcoat interior is surrounded by Wiarton flagstone coping and deck of architectural patterned concrete. The outdoor fireplace and cabana with change room and equipment room add a final touch of convenience. (16 x 28, custom rectangular)

Although diminutive in size, this inviting 'plunge pool' makes a big impression with its dramatic zero-edge wall and top-of-slope location. Finished in white Armourcoat with a blue quartz fleck, it features both an underwater bench and semi-circular steps decoratively edged in tile. Wiarton flagstone decking and coping define the attractive seating area. (13 x 27, custom shape)

This pool tucks beautifully into a small sloping side yard convenient to kitchen and basement walkouts. The pool's 3" zero edge spill wall faces the house for full dramatic effect, while the original patio of tumbled pavers is tied into the new flagstone patio with ledgerock retaining walls and steps. The integral teardrop spa faces an elevated ledgerock feature wall with four sheer descent waterfalls. The premium dark grey Armourcoat interior softly complements the surrounding plantings and ever changing colours of nature. (12 x 24, concrete zero edge)

This massive infinity pool takes full advantage of its rugged Muskoka surroundings. Tons upon tons of granite were moved to create this spectacular show of stone and water. A 22-ft tempered glass spill wall, augmented by large slabs of granite, enables the flow of water to create an infinity edge. To appreciate the relative size, the lower catch basin holds the volume of a normal swimming pool. An additional touch of luxury is a large cabana providing a covered lounge area, change room and bathroom. (main pool: 35 x 50, custom free form)
Betz Pools Limited
This very unique pool has a 2' x 23' tempered glass spill wall, with the flow collecting in a large underground reservoir. Wiarton ledgerock, coping and flagstone lend a bold solidity to the design, while a strip of river rock links the pool area to the putting green and lawn. The pool has a custom cover that neatly retracts into a stone bunker along the shallow end. An 11' wide sheer descent waterfall along the deep end adds a final dramatic touch. Rosedale ‘PARK’ is a detached garage and fence structure designed for a residential property in an old Toronto community rich in trees and preserved parkland. Located on a busy corner lot, the owner’s requirements for the project were two fold:
1) They wanted to manage views from passers-by into their private pool and entertainment areas while maintaining a connection to the ‘park-like’ public realm; and
2) They wanted to include a place to park their car that wouldn’t jeopardize the natural character of the property or spoil one’s experience of the place.
The idea was to use the new garage, fence, hard and soft landscaping together with the existing house, pool and two large and ‘protected’ trees to create a setting and a particular sense of place for each of the anticipated activities including lounging by the pool, cooking, dining alfresco and entertaining large groups of friends.
Using wood as the primary building material, the solution was to create a light, airy and luminous envelope around each component of the program that would provide separation without containment. The garage volume and fence structure, framed in structural sawn lumber and a variety of engineered wood products, are wrapped in a dark stained cedar skin that is at once solid and opaque and light and transparent.
The fence, constructed of staggered horizontal wood slats was designed for privacy but also lets light and air pass through. At night, the fence becomes a large light fixture providing an ambient glow for both the private garden as well as the public sidewalk. Thin striations of light wrap around the interior and exterior of the property. The wall of the garage separating the pool area and the parked car is an assembly of wood framed windows clad in the same fence material. When illuminated, this poolside screen transforms from an edge into a nearly transparent lantern, casting a warm glow by the pool. The large overhang gives the area by the by the pool containment and sense of place. It edits out the view of adjacent properties and together with the pool in the immediate foreground frames a view back toward the home’s family room. Using the pool as a source of light and the soffit of the overhang a reflector, the bright and luminous water shimmers and reflects light off the warm cedar plane overhead. All of the peripheral storage within the garage is cantilevered off of the main structure and hovers over native grade to significantly reduce the footprint of the building and minimize the impact on existing tree roots.
The natural character of the neighborhood inspired the extensive use of wood as the projects primary building material. The availability, ease of construction and cost of wood products made it possible to carefully craft this project. In the end, aside from its quiet, modern expression, it is well-detailed, allowing it to be a pragmatic storage box, an elevated roof 'garden', a lantern at night, a threshold and place of occupation poolside for the owners.

The swimming pool construction was part of a large scale project that included the total transformation of the backyard. The clients requested a pool and spa that would integrate aesthetically with the architecturally designed home and serve as the focal point for the tiered backyard. They also wanted a large pool, but with enough room left over for an outdoor kitchen with adjacent entertaining area, a half basketball court and a putting green. The large pool and spa were carefully positioned to allow plenty of leftover space for the rest of the items on the clients’ wish-list.

The sloping yard creates a natural drop which helps to expose the pool's full-width spill wall. The water tumbling over the invisible three inch tempered glass lip forms a massive sheer descent waterfall. The sounds of gently falling water in the background lend a soothing tone.
