Van Strickland Design

We are in the process of designing our first custom home with Van Strickland Designs. After living in a home that he had designed for another client and seeing the custom homes he has designed we knew that his aesthetic, interst in quality and creativity would make all of the difference in the home we were hoping to build and "age in place" in. Van has used "feet on the ground" exploration to help us understand our property and the potential to invite nature into our home and use passive solar features to make the home more functional! He has also employed incredible diplomacy and years of experience to interpret our needs, our interests and dreams in order to design a home that will flow and fit our lifestyle. We are excited to begin construction this spring!

We met Van through our (soon to be) builder, who has worked with Van for years on various projects, including his parents house. So, having that kind of recommendation we were very interested in seeing how Van would work for us. Happy to say that we are thoroughly impressed with the work he has done so far. Van has taken a lot of time to get to know my husband and myself and our style preferences, and is great at listening to what we want (or think we want!) and transforming those talks into a fabulous home design. It's been great to have Houzz as a tool, so that we can communicate styles or ideas that my husband and I may not have the correct terminology to describe. Van has a great attention for detail and has been able to lead us in the direction of creating a beautiful and functional design for our home. He has made plenty of suggestions that show he understands the style we would like to have in our house (modern farmhouse) and many of his recommendations are in our final plans. He came out to our property, and from where we wanted to "plant" the house, he made quite a few adjustments to the plans that we hadn't even considered; so glad to have his eye on that! Van is also great with explaining why things can or cannot be done, and is very pragmatic in guiding us on our choices and the costs and benefits from those choices. He knows how to get you what you want in a design and keep it within a budget.
