Room size - love the whole design - What are the dimensions of the room? Its beautiful and looks almost the same size as my place but I use the space as a sitting room and this looks such a good idea for me to update my place and do similar. What leads off of this room? Thankyou »
Kitchen cabinet manufacturer? - I like the fact that these white cabinets are not stark,. They are quite welcoming. Is yours custom? Where can I buy them? Thanks? »
What are the floors and what is the counter top opposite the island. BTW, this kitchen is a dream! I checked - What are the floors and what is the counter top opposite the island. BTW, this kitchen is a dream! I checked out Subeekitchen.com for more details and it is well worth it! »
cabinets/molding same color as ceilings? - we are doing a similar color scheme in our kitchen. What white should we use for the ceilings? Thanks a lot! »
subeeskitchen It took me 4 months and 8 stone yards to find the right slab. (Yes - in NJ) A good stone fabricator should have some insight into where to find slabs meeting your requirements.
subeeskitchen Lots of discussion in previously posted questions. The pendants are Hudson Valley "Haverhill" - available through lighting showrooms or online.
What type of handles did you go with on your refrigerator? - They are recommending the pro handles to match the range, but I feel like they are big and bulky...especially on the french door style Sub Zero. What did you end up going with? »
benchseat - How high & deep is the bench seat? I want to make sure I allow enough room for the fusion. The bench in my window won't have a back due to the window. »
Lynda Liptak-Zadeskey Love it but not sure it would work for me. I currently have a heating vent under the window. What could I do about the vent without rerouting the heating ducts?
subeeskitchen It's easy enough to do a test board, but you could also go a shade lighter than the cabinets. Or look at other Houzz photos with off-white cabs to see what you like.
windows and cabinet near sink - I love you layout. I am in the process of designing a new build home and having trouble with a few areas and the kitchen is one of them. Having seen your photos, it sheds new light. Thanks so much. It is lovely by the way. Can you tell me how much counter space is between the range and the sink and on the other side of the sink? I notice there is a counter on this side of the range as well. Are you happy with that amount or is there more that can't be seen? Are there any other views of the room other that from behind the island ?(I saw it on the other photos of your home) Also, is there just the one window on the wall above the sink? What size is it? And would you change anything about the kitchen design? I know that is several ? for you to answer and you have answered so many--I would appreciate you time. If fact you may be the answer to a very stressful situation with my plans that I am having :) Oh one more thing, Is there an entrance to the kitchen from where the pic is taken? In my plan there is a door in this area from my gallery/ mudroom. I would love to see how yours is laid out any sketches anywhere? I am trying to decide if I can fit in a pantry somewhere. My kitchen is open to part of an entry to the stairs and bar area that leads to the great room. Thanks in advance! I will check out your blog too --I love to cook!! »
subeeskitchen There is a picture of the mudroom on this site (search for "subeeskitchen" and it should come up). Doesn't show much, though. The laundry alcove is to the left of the sink that's shown; to the right are cabinets, shelves, boot storage, etc. The pantry is in a hallway that connects the mudroom/laundry to the door we go in and out of most of the time. (Yes - ideally the mudroom would've been located off that door, but it didn't work with the old part of the house.) Right now I'm not planning to post additional photos on Houzz, though I may do a pantry feature on my blog at some point soon.
subeeskitchen The farm-style table is vintage, but Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware have similar models. The hardware is Restoration Hardware ("Bistro" pulls, "Aubrey" knobs, in brushed/satin finish).
lauriebtown Joychanter, you're right, it's technically a quartzite but when I have said that to some people in the past, they naturally think quartz, a man made material which it is not. I was told that a quartzite is technically a granite with a higher level of quartz in it. This one was on the higher price range, I'm not sure how it compared to marble because I didn't price that knowing I would be looking for every stain and etch mark. I negotiated the price down with my distributor and paid $6k total for two slabs which included install, plumbing hook up and ogee edge. I'm in the dc metro so prices tend to be a bit higher out here. Also, my white macaubus has more swirl pattern but some have very linear straight lines giving it a much more contemporary look. The base color of mine has a touch of gray as apposed to a clean white base on a gray veined marble. Good luck and keep us posted on your selection!
subeeskitchen The 60" pine (?) farm-style table is vintage. However, I think Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware carry similar styles. I would actually prefer a pedestal-style for this banquette because the current legs make it hard to slide in around the table.
subeeskitchen There are several photos of the kitchen on this site - they'll come up if you search for "subeeskitchen" from the home page. There are also kitchen shots scattered throughout my blog, subeeskitchen.com (try the post titled "Inside the Kitchen")
schepke I was curious about your recessed lighting. I'm installing the smaller ones (3"). Do you like them? Are they LED? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I only have experience with the 6" and I feel they are too big for the space. Thx!
subeeskitchen I love the smaller ones. (Ours are not LED, but they're on a dimmer switch to save a little electricity). There are some comments on other Houzz questions regarding the lights & placement. Ours are spaced about 4' apart on centers. (You'll need more of the smaller ones to light the same area, and the smaller ones cost more, but I think they're worth it.)
subeeskitchen The fir or the Minwax?? Minwax is everywhere -- HomeDepot, paint stores, etc. I honestly wouldn't go with fir unless you already have it in the house and are trying to match it. (Way too soft.)
subeeskitchen Thanks - this flooring is long-board fir (from Russia), to match the rest of the house. It had a reddish tint to it even before staining. The stain is MinWax Puritan Pine. Note, however, that new fir is VERY soft, and I don't think I'd recommend it unless you had an open floor plan and were trying to match existing floors. It "patinas" very quickly.
kitchen cabs - We need to add a few more cabinets in our kitchen and we are having a problem macthing them. . The doors are "2 panel" high gloss white thermofoil. We do not know where the original owner purchased them. Do you have any suggestions as to where to go/whom to email to see if they have our pattern? Thank you so much! »
Perfection... - I can't help but notice that this kitchen was added to over 70,000 idea books! Your architect got it right, and you must be very pleased with the outcome. It's a stunning space. I'm an interior designer, and it happens to be in my own idea book as well. Congratulations on a beautiful home! »
juanita007 I loved this kitchen and took the pic in to my countertop supplier and installer. I saw a few and everyone of them, I mean -100% said no way to marble in the kitchen, and even worse feedback I received was no honed marble. It too porous, soft and stains no matter what sealant you use. Unless you have lots of money to have it polished out every six months. Again polished out if you've polished it. It was a big disappointment but I've got a kitchen that's used by kids, teens and a husband I just couldn't chance putting so much $$$ into a kitchen I couldn't really "use". Almost like those couches that grandma had with plastic on them. It's just not a material that anyone I spoke to who installed as well as fixed problems with these types of countertops, hmm plastic on the counters?? Guess it could work lol. Hope your kitchen has stayed looking lovely. I went with a quartz (not man made) for my island. Honed granite, which I was warned will have fingerprint issues ect...) I decided I could still work with it. Hope I have no troubles! Lol
Hood height and chandelier - Could you please tell me the height of the hood? Also, it is hard to see the chandelier from the photo. Is it silver or white? Are there crystals on it? What's the diameter? Thanks! »
subeeskitchen The range hood is 18" high and it's 36" above the range. The chandelier is all glass (or crystal) - no dangling crystals. It's about 30" in diameter (8 arms). Preciosa brand, discontinued model.
who is manufacturer of cabinets? just love the whole kitchen - im planning a redo and considerinfg an long island instead of a breakfast bar and small island > My kitchen is like a suare with iland what are your thoughts of the island being about 10 ft and open to breakfast room instead of more closed with the breakfast bar? »
subeeskitchen The cabinets were custom-built, but are a traditional inset/simple panel design. A long island has benefits (work space, storage) if it works with the scale of the room(s), but it can also make it a little hard to get from one side to the other.
How practical are white cabinets for a die hard cook? - We are building a new house and although I LOVE the look of white cabinetry, my inner cook is telling me they aren't practical. Thoughts? »
Eleanore T Hi Subee-new question about banquette seating. Do you use it? Is it functional? My husband ("the expert") seems to think it won't get utilized and not worth the cost. I told him I would ask the real expert (you). Should i stick with my table and chairs or build this into my new design?
subeeskitchen We do use it all the time - for meals as well as for morning coffee. We might use it even more if the table were a pedestal table vs. one w/four legs. The legs make it a little difficult to get around to the back cushion. We usually just pull the table out to let people get in. Besides the "custom"/built-in look, a built-in banquette also offers the bonus of extra storage. Can you ever have enough storage?
daneddy I agonized, lost sleep over this...45" is perfect in a modest kitchen, I suppose if you have a very large kitchen you could go wider than that. We ended up doing ours 46" and is is great too, but our old kitchen in a big "u" required that extra step and it was tiring. This is incredibly important to your future happiness in working in your kitchen. I suggest you lay some card tables out and mimic working in the kitchen, from sink to counter to fridge etc. and see how it feels. My kitchen man with 30 years experience to,d me 42 to 48, yet I still agonized between 45 and 46, but that's just my OCD side I think..our whole kitchen is 13.5x24, with the island down the middle, and it looks quite proportionate with the 46" separation. Good luck!
schepke we are trying to decide between dual fuel and all gas...how is the all gas for baking or do you have a set of electric for that purpose? your kitchen is beautiful...nicely done!
subeeskitchen I do have an electric wall oven to the left of the range. Since it has digital controls (and a pure convection mode), I'll use that for baking when I need to be exact. (Or when it's hot out and I don't want the extra heat from the range.) Honestly, though - I love how quickly the gas oven heats up, and how hot it gets (great for pizzas, roasting, and it does a beautiful job with baking as well. (I also love the BlueStar's infrared broiler.) So if I could only have one oven, I'd probably go with gas.
Confused on paint color? - You posted that you used pure white. Who's paint is that Benjamin Moore? Can u also let us know the finish eg eggshell, satin. Thanks love the kitchen ! If you could respond ASAP that would be great. Painting this week »
subeeskitchen Benjamin Moore Super White is the trim color throughout the house (in a satin finish - we used Impervo oil-based). However, the cabinetmaker used his own special cabinet paint/epoxy finish -- not a Benjamin Moore paint. It's a satin finish, and matches Super White perfectly, however.
subeeskitchen To the left and the right of the range, and to the right of the sink. And electrical strips on each end of the island. And basically all over the kitchen because of building code.
KITCHEN LAYOUT - Can you provide a blueprint/layout of how the entire kitchen layout is and flow to/from the rest of the home. This is exactly what I've been looking for, but need dimensions and location in the home for my architect. »
subeeskitchen The right side of the kitchen is open to a family room of about the same size, minus the bay window extension. There is a smaller entry to the kitchen just behind where this photo was taken. The mudroom is outside this smaller entry, to the left, and there's a pantry to the right. We don't have immediate plans to post detailed layouts on this site. (Some approximate dimensions have been posted in earlier comments.)
subeeskitchen Kitchen width is approx. 16'; the back window side of the bay is 8' and the banquette is 22" deep. The banquette/bench base is 16" high, which is maybe 1" too tall because I wanted thick cushions (these are 4" with foam and batting) so it's overall a little high for table seating. (OK for kids, though)
Beautiful Kitchen!! What are the dimensions of the kitchen island? - Length and width? How many inches in overhang for stools? Would you change the size now or add/change anything? »
tracygradolph Love this! I have a banquette and light bright small kitchen....trying to figure out what fabric to use. Need some "wow factor"...everything is too beige. Any suggestions would help???.
subeeskitchen I personally like beige! However, even with a beige/taupe scheme it's important to throw in some contrast, i.e. charcoal gray. Since custom cushions can be expensive, I wouldn't go too trendy with a fabric scheme; keep the "wow factor" to the pillows or accessories (that can be changed easily when your tastes change).
subeeskitchen We went with a relatively inexpensive Sharp microwave w/a stainless trim kit/surround. Works great. HOWEVER, this is something I didn't consider and next time I'll do differently: (because I'm a little OCD) -- the digital clock LED is yellow on the microwave and bright blue on the Dacor oven right below it.
msdivinedc I've decided to go with Cambria because it is much more user friendly and now I'm down to two choices Linwood or Berkeley. As I noted above I'm going with a travertine backsplash and off-white cabinets. I really like both choices although Berkeley seems a little more "blingie" than the Linwood. Anyway suggestions. The Berkeley has more contrast in it than the Linwood but does have specks of gold in it.
And just as an FYI for those struggling with countertop selection as I am right now, make sure you bring home a good size sample along with the backsplash to see what it looks like in your kitchen. It does make a difference from what it looks like in the showroom with the flouresant lights.
Is there a back to the bench? Are you leaning against the windows? - We have a breakfast nook area we are thinking of adding a bench to - but windows go kind of low. I don't think we have space for a back. Does this work for you? »
subeeskitchen There is a back, built at a slight incline for comfort. However, we didn't factor in the window sill trim, which extends out over the bench back. So the nice angled back doesn't do much good. However, the pillows help. For eating at the table, it's not really an issue. For lounging, people usually lean back in the corners of the bay, or lie down like it were a daybed.
Does the architect do the work, or just the design? - Who did you contract to do the work? I have a hard time finding great contractors in my area. Thanks! »
Can I ask you the cost from start to finish? - I have kitchen renovation anxiety, but this is just what I am looking for. Please let me know. Thanks! »
bmarie2012http://www.thwstone.com/Products.html#anchor_59 this is my local vendor for countertops, we were going to go with marble in our kitchen but began to read up on the wear and tear that it COULDNT take, so we have decided to go with a stone that has more of a marble look to it without being actual marble, so far we have found some great looks but we havent settled yet! its best to just go and look at your slabs before you decide
Clearstone, LLC That's old school thinking. Marble is the prettiest stone available and the problem associated with marble was solved years ago. Acid-etching is caused when acidic products come in contact with marble. Clearstone prevents anything acidic from coming in contact with the stone by coating it with a layer of protection - a coating. It's safe to use in a kitchen and provides at least a 15 year warranty. It can be either highly polished or honed look. Locate trained applicators at www.ClearstoneUSA.com. Now, go take a look at the beautiful marble choices out there!
subeeskitchen Hi - I'm pretty sure the stain we used was Minwax Puritan Pine. The wood is fir, which had a redish cast. (We were trying to match the old fir floors throughout the rest of the house.)
jburton Can you please tell me what the name of your discontinued chandelier is? I am thinking about having a custom chandelier made and would love to find a good picture of your discontinued model online to reference. Thanks .
subeeskitchen Hi - sorry for the delay. I'm the homeowner collaborated on much of the kitchen design. The 48" floating stainless shelf is from Danver; I ordered it online (available through many retailers).
Marble Countertops - I always love the photos with marble countertops...but are you having any issues with staining? Any suggestions on upkeep or preventing damage/staining to marble in the kitchen? »
Clearstone, LLC Clearstone can be applied anywhere in the country. If we don't have a trained applicator in your city Clearstone trainers will come do the application. www.ClearstoneUSA.com
What is the size of the kitchen? - I love this kitchen! Functional and gorgeous. We're looking to refinish an old victorian and everything is pretty tight. The kitchen is about 11 x 17 - is this kitchen much larger? Thanks! »
I love the bay window seating. - We are having one built, as well. I haven't had any luck finding cushions for it though. Did you have yours custom made? »
subeeskitchen Yes - custom-made is the way to go for a perfect fit. The fabric is Sunbrella outdoor fabric, so they clean up very easily (usually with just a damp sponge).
subeeskitchen Thanks! Cabinets were custom-made (Darren Edsall of NJ); he put a crown and trim together to take it all the way up to the ceiling. (9') Moulding sprayed to match cabinetry.
subeeskitchen Range is a 48", 8-burner Blue Star -- very powerful but I love it. Unused burners make a great place to set hot pans from the oven. Hood is 48" ProLine with a powerful remote blower (blower is in the attic). I found the Danver stainless floating shelf online.
erinblackhurst1 Your wood floor looks fabulous, but if you were to do a tile floor instead, what color/style of tile would you recommend that would still look good with all the cabinetry, countertops, etc?
subeeskitchen I have large (12x24) dark gray slate tiles in my mudroom and really like them. Belgian bluestone is a great look, but it's expensive and I don't know how it would hold up for kitchen usage (etching from acids, etc. ) Maybe there's a dark brown or charcoal veining in your countertops that could be tied into a floor color? Best bet is to get a bunch of samples from a tile showroom and see what you like best.
babykitty Twigs are from a curly willow tree and are usually available in 4 to 5 ft. length, either from finding a tree and, or yhey may be purchased at any wholesale flower mart.
kbangs Love the color and look of the Pietra Cardosa, especially against the white cabinetry.
How does it hold up with kids and the inevitable spills?
I am trying to decide between the Jet Mist granite and the Pietra Cardosa.
I think your kitchen is gorgeous. I am married to an Italian with the pasta at least once or twice a week but I am not letting that change my mind after seeing your home. We were in Italy some years ago and marble is all over for hundreds of years. One question about the Pietra cards marble how is that with cleaning because that is close to the cooktop and sink where all of the prep work is really done? Thanks in advance.
subeeskitchen Hi - Trying to catch up on comments. I went with pietra over soapstone because all of the soapstone I saw was too green -- I wanted gray. The pietra cleans easily, even right next to the stove. No staining, even with heavy use. The only complaint would be the softness -- there are quite a few chips around the sink cutout (from heavy pots, pans, etc). I still don't think I'd do it differently, however.
Dimensions - I love this kitchen with the built in window seat - have a table just like that and have been thinking couches, but love this idea. Could you tell me the dimension of this room? Thanks »
Just wanted you to soak this in and not "work" at answering a query. - I just wanted to say that not only do you have one kick-ass beautiful kitchen, but you are one of the nicest and most patient persons alive. THANK YOU for answering all questions, (many repeated ones because others don’t care to read previous posts) and I’ve learnt so much from you! I’m going to follow your blog from now on too! Thanks! »
What are the dimensions of the island? - I don't want a seam in my island countertop, but can't go any wider than 8 feet, so I would like to have a deeper island (6 feet at least). If I do that, I believe that will limit my choice of materials. Love this marble too, but I'm not sure if marble comes in slabs that large. »
6. Dreamy kitchen window seat. This big window seat in soft grays and blues adds a dreamy, relaxing touch to this clean and warm kitchen. The built-in adds extra seating space without taking up too much square footage.
5. It helps you avoid paying for work you don’t want. Having a clear understanding of your project before construction begins is the best method to significantly reduce the problem of unnecessary charges. With all that said, there is definitely no substitute for having an experienced architect who understands the permit process and building codes. While 3-D design can be helpful to you and your architect, know that great designs do not come from computer programs. They come from design professionals who have spent countless hours designing, reviewing plans, improving details and listening to everything you want in your home.Tell us: Are you considering 3-D design for your next project?

I like that the eating area is so close to the cooking area, and that there are so many windows. I wouldn't like built in benches, but would like some room there for a couch and chair so that people could relax on the couches/ on chair while others are eating and others cooking. This is my favorite layout so far particularly b/c of the light.
