We are designing the fireplace surround for our living room and would appreciate advice/opinions. We will be using a Carrara marble slab, with dimensions of 100 x 60 x 1 in. We want the face of the slab to run from the floor all the way to the ceiling, which is 120 inches (no hearth or mantle). Unfortunately, the slab height is not tall enough to reach the ceiling without making a seam. There are two alternatives: use the whole slab and have the face height end at 100 inches (which would be 20 inches short of the ceiling--see pic of the tape margin), or just have the face height around 50 inches). Our concern is that if the slab ends just 20 in. short of the ceiling it will look unfinished, but would it be more impressive to use the whole slab.
