Where are the sweet potatoes?

I live in Miami (Zone 10). My daughter's Girl Scout Troop (of which I am the lucky leader) decided to ask the town if we could develop an organic vegetable garden on city property. July 2009 we were given the go ahead. We had a winter garden going for the growing season here (September to April). This summer we decided to plant sweet potatoes since I didn't think much else would grow in this heat. I bought sweet potato slips on-line and received them at the end of May in good condition. We started planting immediately and finished up by the second week of June. The plants / vines are looking beautiful. Out of curiosity I stuck my fingers in the dirt looking for the beginnings of a sweet potato. I don't find anything. All I find are roots. Does this mean we did something wrong? Are we going to end up with sweet potatoes? I thought these things were so easy to grow. When we planted them we stuck at least 4 inches of the rooted end of the slip straight down into the ground.
