which to cut?

I have a pink grandaflora that is about 5 ft tall. the old canes are about the size of a nickle and quarter in dia. and about 16 inches long with this years growth added on to that making the 5 ft. I also have newer growth coming about6 inches from ground the size of a dime. Of course the dime size is coming out and has grown in amoungst the older canes. Wondering which to cut back. Plant is healthy as far as I can determine. Please ask questions if needed and all comments are appreciated. Thanks. Pembroke

Why do you want to cut it back?
I'm not being critical -- just curious . . .

Yeah, normally we'd leave it alone until around April 1. If the new cane is just emerging now, it may be damaged by winter, but you won't know until spring.

Heavy pruning now could force more unwelcome (because vulnerable) new basal growth.

newer canes are as long as the older canes,dime size. Why to cut: the newer canes are rubbing against the older canes. Just trying to clean up a little before winter sets in. Normally I prune in the Spring also. Sometimes I prune to open the center for better air movement. Thanks. Pembroke

We just stick something between the canes to wedge em apart. OR you can tie one or 'tother back, to separate them
