I have been growing Four O'Clock plants for years.
I never trim them after blooming. They are very self cleaning and continue to bloom untill the weather cools, when their tops die down(they become brown and just fall off).
Fortunately beside the seeds, which I agree with youy are just fun to get, they set the permanent tuber and they sprout next year bigger and better.
I would not be without them.

I have only one and I don't think it likes its spot. Are yours in full sun? What exposure is best?

I have quite a few growing in different locations. The ones that are the biggest and strongest have a southern exposure but do get some shade from a nearby tree. The ones that get only a few hours of sun are doing well too but are not as big. Last year I had a really nice pale red plant but this year only the yellow bloomed. So the search is on for some red colored ones.

I had the same experience planted a packet of seeds and had different colors in an area tha gets sun and shade collected seeds and scattered them this spring only the yellows grew which are doing fairly well but not great. I have also grown them all over they did best in the mid west cooller climates than ours now.

I too have only one color, kind of orangish red. They are in the southern exposure under a tree where nothing else grew in the past. They do well in the fall and later i just yank them out after the first frost. Quite invasive is what i think of them when they are not blooming:-)! When they are blooming, they are quite beautiful and their fragnance is wonderful.
