Hello, Inge!

The correct spelling is Picea abies 'MaleÃÂek.' This is a broom selection found by D. Peáek, Czech Republic, in 1981. I've had mine only a couple of years. Right now it's about the size of a baseball, rather tight, globose, with rather prominent buds. Growth rate seems be less than an inch a year (~2cm). Unlike many of the Picea abies brooms, this cultivar doesn't burn in full sun.

I'd say buy it. There's always room in a conifer garden for another tiny gem such as this.

Hi, you have to search Picea abies MalíÃÂek in czech language. MalíÃÂek /maliczek/ translation to english - pinky finger. Zsolt change some characters, maybe.
Btw, toe thumb spruce wb exist too - Picea abies PaleÃÂek. paleczek/.

Jan brings up an interesting point here. In German cultivars we turn an umlauted "a" into "ae" and an umlauted "o" into "oe" etc. For example,

Abies koreana 'Gruebele' in German it's Abies koreana 'Grübele' and never Abies koreana 'Grubele.'

If we follow the same pattern into the Czech language should Picea abies 'MalíÃÂek' be written as Picea abies 'Maliczek' and never Picea abies 'Malicek?'

I've also noted the proper spelling of the cultivar name. Jan, is 'Malecek' as we're used to seeing never correct? If this cultivar is named for a pinky finger in the Czech language then I believe the name must be either:

Picea abies 'Maliczek' or 'MalíÃÂek' depending on your computer.

There exist 2 different types of WB from Picea abies MaleÃÂek (finding from Mr. MaleÃÂek) and Picea abies MalíÃÂek (finding from Mr. Peáek)

Thank you for the added information, Leny. I believe, then that the cultivar that we have in the U.S. is Picea abies 'Maleczek.' I take back what I said about this one being found by Mr. Peszek.

I would really like to see pictures of both cultivars of similar age for comparison.
