planting in areas where trees were cut?

Hubby and I had a dying oak cut down last year. While there is now more sunlight for my existing crape myrtles, I do have a question about new plantings.

I have heard that you can't put new plants in the same area where you've cut down a tree, due to something about the decaying trunk/roots? Of course, I didn't HEAR that until AFTER I'd planted several things around it, such as junipers, rock cotoneaster and lantana. I wanted them to sort of scramble over the trunk/root area, since, due to the tree's proximity to the electrical box, the tree guy was hesitant to grind the stump. Some things I've planted there seem to do pretty well so far and some, not so much. That could completely be coincidence or...???

Does anyone know about this?
