rosemary - where to keep it

I was given a potted rosemary "tree" at Thanksgiving and I'm wondering where the best place would be for it to live. I'm in Chicago and we do get very cold temps. Would it survive outdoors? Although I've been doing some raised bed vegetable gardening I'm not really into houseplants. I have a cat who likes to nibble them and I'm never too sure which plants are okay for him. Would rosemary do okay in an unheated mudroom? Still gets darn cold sometimes...

Your rosemary should do well in the unheated mudroom. It is a very hardy plant, and as long as you water it when it gets dry (stick your forefinger in the soil, and if it is dry to the second knuckle, water) it should survive well. If your cat nibbles rosemary, it won't hurt him, but it will improve his breath!

That mudroom would need to be pretty sunny in order for the rosemary to be happy. Inspect for spider mites often; they seem to be able to find indoor rosemary very quickly!

Just to add a one more tip--you may want to pot it up as soon as you can too. Rosemary likes a lot of root room.
