I'm a fan of these county conservation district plant sales. I'm affiliated with a non-profit camp/conference center and they donate leftovers from the sale free to such organizations.

I always attend and often volunteer at the Snohomish County Conservation Disctric plant sale.

The plants are sold bareroot in excellent condition. There often are oversized plants available too, not listed in the catalog. Sometimes a batch of trees goes 2 years before they are dug, and they offer them at ridiculous prices. Once they had 8-foot tall paper birches for $3!

If they are sold bare root, then February is an excellent time to plant them out.

Late February is a perfect time to plant a lot of things, that's one reason they have these sales at that time. Go ahead and plant them where you want them!

Thanks for the advice about planting them out. They are sold bare root. Having moved here last year from Massachusetts, it's hard to get my head around the idea that February is ok for planting out. So, thanks for setting me straight.

And thanks for the invite to the Green Elephant swap. I probably won't have much to swap in November, but I might come to the Winter Sowing one, and next spring I'll definitely have a few things to bring.
