Is it Dead?

I moved recently but it happened in a strange way. I was part of an emminent domain project. So what happened was I put my peony in a pot and took it in the house. I had to because there were theives taking everything from the houses even before I moved out. Well anyway the move took 6 months longer than it was suppose to so the peony sat in the house for a year in a pot. It didn't get a cold snap at all. And it didn't come up in May. So I need to know did I just plant a dead division?

If the time in the pot was at least a little moist it should not die. I am assuming it was not newly planted when it was dug up and potted. Al

Thankyou so much for your post. You give me hope. No it wasn't newly planted it had one growing season under it's belt.

If the inside of the root is still a creamy white then you are fine....just needing a cold period but, if it has rotted and is dark brown inside, then it maybe tough for it to survive. For a short period of time you can store them in the refrigerator packed in peat moss in a plastic bag or something. It works for a short while.

Don't worry about winter chilling now. Chilling is only a requirement to initiate a bloom cycle it does not help the plant survive. Al
