Like bacteria there are many kinds of fungus in our environment most are not harmful are beneficial, although some few are disease pathogens. Whether what you have is a disease or not is difficult to tell. The soils I have seen in NE Ohio range from beach sand to clay so what type of soil do you have?
How much organic matter is in your soil?
How well does your soil drain?
How well does your soil retain moisture?
What kind of life is in that soil?
what does that soil smell like?

The roots of that grass look like a sedge. Could you take a picture of the whole area so we can see what it looks like when it's growing?
When I have had big clumps of grass that came right up, it always turned out to be grubs that had destroyed the roots; big areas of dead grass was, for us in NJ, cinch bugs. Let's find out what kind of grass you've got before looking for insects or diseases.

I thought bentgrass also.

Sorry if my quesion was unclear. I'm just trying to figure out what this stuff is and how do I cure or get rid of it. The soil drains well and is in part sun. As I mentioned, it started off last year in one area and now I have it in several spots. Thanks again for your help.
