Blueberries will pretty much only work if you have sandy, acidic soil. If you live in far north Houston, there's a good change you have the right kind of soil, but outside of that area, it would probably be easier to find an alternative plant.

Although more of a small tree, loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) was something I loved eating as a kid in the area and is care-free. Hardy citrus trees are also super easy to grow. Thornless blackberries are also fun to grow, but not very ornamental.

Someone may be able to chime in on other edible landscape plants.

I have loquat at our current homes. This tree is kind of messy as the leaves are so big and when fruits felt off the tree, young trees are everywhere in the yard.
