NEW: 2nd annual Named/Rare/Unusual Seed swap!!

jcpyburn
18 years ago

Hi everyone,

Last year I hosted a seed exchange that was for named varieties only. I had so much fun that I would love to do it again!! This swap is for seeds only and only for seeds that are named/rare/or unusual. No "orange marigolds" or "white daisies". Any kind of seeds are fine(veggie, flower, herbs, etc...) as long as they meet the criteria of named/rare/unusual! If you are not sure if something qualifies please just ask! There is no minimum of packets to send but the more you send the more variety everyone gets!

Here is how it will work. Everyone will send their seeds to me in a bubble mailer with an address label and return postage inside. You can send as many packs as you want but only 5 max of each variety, that way we keep the mix good! You will get however many packets back that you sent in and I will try to include a bonus for each player from my own stash. Everyone can send a want list and a don't want list and I will do my best to fill some of them, I only ask that you post it here on this post as well as print it out and put it in your package when you send. That will help me with organization a lot!! As many people as wants to can join, so I hope we get a good crowd. Last year we had about 9 participants including me so I hope to at least double that!! I know that I was still a newbie last year so I hope that more people will join this year!! We still had some awesome seeds last year! I spent many hours googling to see what the flowers looked like on all the seeds I had!

I think that I have included all the info but if anything that I have said is not clear please let me know! I will see how many people sign up and then set a date for the seeds to be in by. Once I receive all the seeds then I will have the packages back on the way to you in one week or so!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope everyone joins! The more people we have the more fun it will be!! Oh and one more thing EVERYONE is welcome to join! Not just "newbies" or "old hands" since all the seeds are coming to me I know that everyone that sends in will get seeds back!!

Thanks!

Carly

    Welcome Patty! Glad to have you aboard! Now everybody that has signed up don't forget to post your wants on here so that if someone has something that you want they may want to send it along in their seeds! So lets get those want lists up! I can't wait, I love doing this! I hope that we will still pick up some more people over the weekend, we are up to six I think including me so if anyone else is interested you have a chance to get some really great seeds and there is no minimum of seed packets to send so if you only have one type of plant that qualifies you can send it and get some back in return!

    Hi Carly,

    I'm thinking about joining, this sounds like alot of fun. Can I ask a question though? Is it OK to send seeds from people you received in a trade? They haven't been "tested" but I trust every single person I received them from as sending me the EXACT seed that is in the envelope.

    Thank you so much,
    Kim

    Hi, Kim,

    Thanks so much for asking the question! I think that it would be fine with me! It doesn't bother me in the least to get seeds that others have received in a trade. If anyone in the swap however would prefer not to receive them I would do my best not to send them to them or at least to have them marked in some way. So I say welcome, I hope you decide to join!

    I have allium schubertii seeds and allium annuum "varingata", black knight scabiosa

    Can I join?

    ellen

  • jcpyburn

    Of course you can join Ellen!! There is no minimum of seeds because whatever you send you get back! You can send a max of 5 packets of each variety so if you send 5 of each of those you will get fifteen different packs back! I know I for one would LOVE to have either of your alliums! I love them! so feel free to join! Also if you didn't want to send that many or didn't have that many trades to send you can send less!

    I also forgot to post some guidelines on how many seeds each packet should have so I will go ahead and do that now:

    Large seeds: like beans, peas, four o'clocks 10-15 per packet
    Medium seeds: like hollyhock, datura, scabiosa, alliums, balloonflower, etc anything you can count easily but is not huge 20-25 seeds per packet
    Small seeds: Like petunia, torenia, thyme, snapdragons, 1/8 - 1/4 of a teaspoon most generally,

    Now I will not be able to count or measure each seed packet individually and if you send 9 seeds of something very large that shouldn't be a problem, but please send the size of packet that you would like to receive in return! If I receive packets that only have like 3 or 4 seeds in them you will likely get them back so keep that in mind! It is not fair for someone to send 15 of their seeds and only get a few of yours. Unless it is something on their wants list and then I would ask them if they wanted it! Anyways, I am getting a little long winded here! I am sure that everyone will send a fair amount of seeds, I just wanted to be clear so there was no confusion!! Thanks so much to everyone who has joined! We are doing good, we are up to 9 possibly 10 people!!

    This looks great! Thanks Carly for offering this RR to us! I would love to join in the fun!

    I have plenty to share! That is if I can offer my open pollenated - hand collected seed- I will be limited if I can only share new seed from commercial packets....

    I am curious- there are many non vegi takers- if I say I am interested in odd or rare or heirloom or unusual ones- I wont get all veg in return- will I???? I love foliage and flowers- but like to try a few odd veg too.....

    Carley, I would like to offer to help you by placing folks wants together in seperate baggies inside my envelope, with their GW name on a peice of paper in the individuals baggie as well, instead of placing the names for whom it is intended right on the packet of seeds. That way you will be able to toss it in the right pile a little easier than having to look it all up- and if you dont need it to go to the person who asked for it as they have a few packets of that already- no-one but you knows. Would that help you out?

    I would love to try my hand at growing these in the following list- or any additional ones listed on my member page - please check there as well-

    * Aconitum heterphyllum
    * Anemone biarmiense
    * Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing'
    * Bellevalia romana
    * Cardiocrinum cordatum
    * Cassia marilandica
    * Caulophyllum thalictroides
    * Cyclamen hederifolium 'Pure Silverleaf'
    * Corydalis Nobilis
    * Dracocephalum argunense var. Japonicum
    * Digitalis ferruginea, laevigata, lantana
    * Disporum smithii
    * Gailardia grandiflora orange- so sorry- that is the only name I have seen advertised-
    * Gentiana nivalis
    * Heteropappus meyendorfii 'Blue Knoll'
    * Heuchera- named, not 'Palace Purple'
    * Illiamna remota
    * Impatients balfouri
    * Lewsia cotyledon
    * Nicotiana langsdorfi 'Cream Splash'-
    * Nicotiana Only the Lonely
    * Any sun lovers with Buff in the name/color
    * Your favorite plant- be it herb- veg- annual- or zone 4 to 5 hardy perennial(if possible)- tropical or maybe even water garden plant (do they make seeds?)- If you love that plant- it must be great and I would love to try to grow it too! I will know it's a favorite if you put an "F" on the seedpacket...

    Please let me know when and where to send my envelope of goodies!

    Thanks to all!

    I just want to add, I am open to any unusual edibles, I have a 1/4 acre at a friends farm that I can use just for veggies =)
    Some of my wants in this area are...

    *Ornamental gourds (small fleshy type, yeah I know they're not edible!) especially 'crown of thorns'
    *Aka shiso, purple shiso (spelling?) asian herb
    *Anything wierd, unusual, fun to grow and tasty!

    I am starting to see things I can send, hooray!
    **Margaret, have I got some black plants for you =) I'm a collector!
    **Scouttiegirl, I see you listed geranium chocolate candy, would you like solstice chocolate? lmk and I will see if my plant has seeds yet =)

    **Carly, I think the only info I didn't see (or just missed) was the deadline for sending =) Also, would '04 seeds be ok? I don't mind geting them myself, but I know some others can be picky about this. Maybe we should specify four ourselves?

    Wow I go away from the computer for one day and we are up at my count 18! I am so glad that we have already gotten so many!

    Margaret6a  DonÂt let the specific wants list overwhelm you! We canÂt meet everyoneÂs needs! I am hoping to meet at least three needs off of each persons list but that depends on what everyone sends in!!

    Mysticmoon  I think commercial packets would be just fine since we are talking about things that are specific named varieties and you would have a better chance of getting true to name plants. But if anyone would rather not receive them please feel free to let me know and I will try and make sure that you donÂt

    Barbamaman  I think those seeds sound wonderful, I will have to google them here in a bit!

    Julie MN Â No I wouldnÂt send you ALL the veggies LOL! I will do my best to give a good variety of what you have asked for!!

    It is not too late to join I think that I will take sign ups until Tuesday and then I will send the info to mail your seeds. I need the people who have signed up but have their email address blocked to either email me directly or unblock your email and post to let me know so that I can email you directly! Thanks

    As to people separating out the seeds into baggies as to who they are for that would be fine with me! But keep in mind that they can only get back as many packets as they send so if they reach their limit then I will send them to someone else! Other than that I think that it is a great idea!! I am so glad that everyone is so excited and I want to again welcome everyone who has joined!! I already have seen seeds on at LEAST 7 lists that I can fill!!

    Also if you havenÂt posted a want list and donÂt have a trades page PLEASE post at least in general what you are looking for so that I know what kinds of things you would like!!

    I think that I have answered all the questions but if I missed any or if anyone has anymore please feel free to post or email me directly! Thanks

    Carly

    Hi! I forgot to mention also that I've seen stuff on several lists that I can provide as well; I'll send them separated with the person who wanted them name on it. I'll include them in the pack I send. I assume this is to your house, Carley? I have your address already, lol...it's not like we've traded once or twice or thirteen times (okay, not really 13)

    Wow -- is there still time for me to join in?

    I'm kind of a newbie but from your lists I see lots that I can send to fill wishes- so here goes.

    Any heuchera
    Coleus (black dragon or others)
    Columbine - single colored varieties- bright colors or an all white variety is better!
    Lobelias -- or other trailers for pots
    Black, rust or peach colored flowers for my peach garden
    Echinachea- other than white swan or the plain purple variety(Peach would be great)
    Daisies - have clara curtis, giant white, and white shasta-- my three little girls just love to cut and cut all season long and far be it from me to discourage future gardeners!
    Coreopsis of any variety I don't have
    (coreopsis I have include:
    pink, zagreb, seashell, mahogohny midget, moonbeam)
    Lavendar - Spanish
    Pink Forget me nots
    Black Eyed Susan Vine - all colors
    Gladiola Seeds
    Monarda
    Flowering Groundcovers -- nothing invasive like vinca or ajuga

    I would prefer not to get--
    Daturas, Moonflowers, Four O'clocks -except for the variegated kind -would love those, Cactus, Succulents or shade lovers --other than what was listed above-- I have very little shade. Also not interested in herbs and have all my veggie seeds for next year allready.

    Carly -

    I need rattail radish and named monardas. I grew cinnamon ferns from spore this year! It'd be fun to try some other kinds.

    Please no orange colors.

    Carly, should we put a bunch of info on each packet? Color, height, common name, zone, germ. info.? So much work for you to google all these...

    Golly this is shaping up nicely!
