Where to buy seeds?

carolynp

I am looking for sungold seeds (do they go under another name), ildi seeds, and bloody butcher, all in one place. I can't find anyone who has sungold seeds. Equally, I can't find any place that has ildi and bloody butcher. Do you guys have any secret places I can try?

Thanks,

Carolyn P.

Sungold is a hybrid (most do not save seed as they will not grow out true) and Johnny's Selected Seed stocks them.

I do not know about the others you seek. A Google search usually will lead to a source.

    Good luck.

I was just looking for sungold seeds myself! I then learned it is a hybrid by a japanese seed company; I decided to order my sungolds from a asian seed importer as I was planning on trying some asian bolt resistent vegetable hybrids anyway. Two such companies I know of are kitazawaseed.com and evergreenseeds.com.

I don't understand the problem with the Sungold or Bloody Butcher as both are commonly available.

    The 3 big suppliers:
    tomatogrowers.com
    tomatofest.com
    totallytomatoes.com

    as well as
    vesseys.com
    reimers.com
    territorialseed.com
    johnnyseeds.com
    evergreenseeds.com

to name just a few that list them both per a Google search.

Ildi is a rare variety but Parks, tomatofest.com, Reimer's, and Thompson Morgan all list it.

OK, I hate to prolong this discussion, but I DID do a google search before I posted the question. I'm trying to find a seller that sells all three varieties: ildi, bloody butcher, and sun gold. I think the problem is that bloody butcher and sun gold are hybrids? I still haven't found a source for all three. Thanks very much for helping me find some more sources, though. I will keep them in my favorites as I keep looking.

    Check out...

    http://www.rachelssupply.com/Tomato.htm

I see seeds for ildi and bloody butcher there, but not sungold, however, they have something called "sungella" described as " 'the new Sungold' by discriminating growers across the country" - "A breeding triumph that crosses ever-popular Sungold with a larger, orange-skinned heirloom to create these orange, golfball sized fruits".

When I first started learning about heirloom tomatoes,

I would attempt to find ONE place to order ALL my seed selections to save money with freight and packing.

    NOT ANYMORE!

I would prefer to spend extra money on freight and feel confident the seed would be true and would germinate.

I have learned there are seed companies and there are seed companies who do a good job of producing seed and operating a reputatable business.

I select the company just as carefully as I select the seed.

I agree with John above. That is why I begin with FEDCO seeds and pick most from there. Then I move on to Sandhill Preservation and then I see what is left over. I am then down to a few special plants and I will usually order extra seeds so I dont have to order every year.

I save so much money at Fedco that I feel I get to buy the other seeds for free from other companies. They also have excellent selections for northern gardeners.

Johnnys is ok but when I compare prices my low cost yankee blood orders from Fedco. Johnnys is getting into all the newest hybrids. I prefer OP. I buy at minimum 40 different seed packs each year. So it would be easy to spend an extra $100 if I was not careful.

Territorial for example. If I purchase 1 seed pack it might cost $4 for the pack plus $7 for shipping. That is way too much. I can get some of those same seeds from FEDCO for $1 with free shipping. a huge savings. Of course in my example I have maximized the difference for impact. I think $7 minimum shipping is outrageous. The maximum shipping charge at Fedco is $3 and it is free if you order $30.

Fedco is extremely honest and professional and sells only seeds at the highest quality.

Sandhill is very different. They make their own heirloom seeds. They are into preservation and I like to support their efforts. A great small home company doing wonderful work. they have hundreds of heirloom toms. I purchased 5 different types of long keeping toms this spring from them. Great company. some wonderful rare seeds that you will want to grow.

learn more about these two companies and you will like them also.

I think the problem is that bloody butcher and sun gold are hybrids?

    *****

Sungold is an F1 hybrid but Bloody Butcher is not.

Bloody Butcher was bred by Sahin Seeds in the Netherlands and released in 1998. But it is open pollinated, not hybrid.

(they have something called "sungella" described as " 'the new Sungold' by discriminating growers across the country" - "A breeding triumph that crosses ever-popular Sungold with a larger, orange-skinned heirloom to create these orange, golfball sized fruits".)

I haven't grown Sungella and don't intend to but I don't think anyone who has reported back on it thinks it's anything like Sungold in terms of taste.

I agree with only dealing with reputable vendors rather than the small fly-by-nite, blink-and-they-are-gone vendors. There is no advantage to one order convenience and saving a bit of postage when the seed you get can't trusted.

Your problem is that you are including a rare, very limited demand variety in your list of 3 so the odds of finding all 3 from the same high quality vendor is very slim.

I have bought extensively from these three and have had great results. They only sell Heirloom varieties. I have a sun-dried tomato business and have over 100 plants each year. I always buy 6-10 new varieties (new to me) to "test" each year. I want them with virtually no juice, VERY few seeds, a good size and of course, GREAT taste.

http://www.mariseeds.com/ She has her seeds divided into groups like "Paste", "slicing" etc.

http://www.tomatobob.com/ Bob has some unusual and harder to find seeds, over 600 varieties. Great germination.

http://www.heirloomtomatoes.bizland.com/ 400 varieities and I have never been dissapointed in their seeds.

Wow!! Thanks very much for all of your input. I will definitely add those places to my list. I have already spent a bunch for the upcoming season and I will report my findings. And thanks much for your generous offer Peter!
