I have grown the variety "Long Keeper" and had tomatoes until early December. These were picked in October in zone 6b and brought inside to finish ripening. I could have planted them a little later and maybe had a few last longer.

worth trying. For me there good when picked ripe 0ff the vine and will ripen in 4 to 8 weeks when picked green and keep at room temp in dry place. Good luck Bill
PS In atlanta I eat ripe toms each Christmas.

I raised the Burpee Long Keepers a couple of years and found that they didn't last any longer than regular summer varieties. It is now December, and I still have Rutgers, Golden Oxheart and Large Cherries ripening on the counter and in paper bags.

I've heard the claim that keeper tomatoes can last months...what does this mean exactly? They will ripen over months if picked green?? Will they keep longer if they are already ripe? Do keeper varieties have to be stored in some special way to delay full ripening until the right time?

Sort of off topic, but I have a store bought tomato sitting on the counter that I bought back in September. It still looks fine. Three months on a kitchen counter with no special treatment. It still amazes me. Not sure it's really a tomato though...

So, should I order "keeper" seeds, or just try to keep what's left to ripen in my garage or some other cool place?

Any opinions on keepers? I read somewhere that Polish Pastel kept well, any other ideas?

I grew 'longer keeper' this year, not burpee type.
Through no fault of it's own*, all but one tom went bad.

The sole survivor sits in my basement to this day, slooooowly ripenening. I can't wait to taste it.

The ones that 'went bad' were pretty crack resistant and resistant to all the other calamities that befall me every year.

I'll try it again next year.

*I neglected them for a few days on a towel that got wet.
