If it's just one room and you'll finish it in a day or two, I'd rent. If it's going to take longer, then I'd consider buying. But I'd buy used (probably on ebay) and resell there afterwards.

In neither case would I buy a cheap one and resell. A good tool makes a big difference.

Buy one (new or used) and resell it when you are done. That takes the pressure off you to hurry and get the tool back.

You will need a pneumatic floor nailer AND a 16 gauge finish nailer AND a compressor. And nails. And a mallet (comnes with nailer) AND a "floor puller" bar to snug the boards up tight.

NOTE: The floor nailer can't be used real close to the walls because of the way it works, so if you have a skinny kitchen, it might be better to use the finish nailer for all of it.

I've done about 700 square feet with a cheap pneumatic nailer from NUMAX. Read the instructions, oil it as recommended, add a squirt of dry lubricant on the tongue (where the nail gets shoved out), and it's good for homeowner use. It's not like you are putting down 1500square feet a day all week long.
