We've not done so, but my sister in law has always had a family portrait over their fireplace. I think it's a wonderful tradition.

I will tell you once my fireplace gets installed next month it is a garantee that our family protrait will be hung there.......it will be beautiful and IMO the perfect thing to hang above your fireplace.

I always wanted to take a favorite family photo and blow it up on canvas in black and white. I know there are companies online that do this pretty resonable I thought. i just googled canvas photos. Just a thought

I'm funny about photos, I think sepia or b/w will look best enlarged and hung so predominantly.

It may not have much longevity if its right in your living room.

When I was a kid, I was embarrassed by any picture that was more than a year old, and would not have wanted everyone who came in the house to see it. To the point that I would have taken it down myself.

I think it will look very nice but I'm also with Palimpsest on this one. My parents still have photos up (I know you're talking about just one) in their house and I've love to take them down. The most current one is 2 years old. I would just keep in mind that a couple years down the road everyone will be older than what's on the wall. If that doesn't bug you then I wouldn't worry about it.

It's a very "southern" thing to hang a family photo over the mantel, but I think it looks best when the photo is taken in a lovely outdoor setting. JMO. :)

We plan to change out the photo every year with a current one.

We have an "artsy" professional shot printed on canvas of our 2 kids (2 and 8 at the time) walking along the shore at sunset.
