So Cal (OC) Folks - Cheap project antique pine cabinet on CL

last modified: 8 years ago

I just looked at this pine cabinet on CL. It needs more work than I have time, but they need to get rid of it this weekend. You can get it for less than the $50 they are asking. Thought I'd share in case someone else needs something to do!

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/fuo/5505280477.html

51" wide 24" deep 34 1/2" tall

2 drawers 2 doors

forgot to add that he had a cool park bench and some copper pots too. All are projects for the right person.

What a BARGAIN!!!!! I'd buy it and stash it until you have the time you work on it! If I wasn't 3000 miles away, I would. :-)

Ha! I would have to get a divorce and I've only been married six and a half years.

Thanks for sharing. It's not my style, but it's nice to see that a good item occasionally makes in onto our CL.

    @1929. Hide it somewhere.

With my DH I could --- in plain sight.

Thanks. It was a Craigslist find. Fair deal too, but not along the lines of the piece posted in the link. There was an huge antique dealer here who also imported antique wood and made custom pieces. This is made from antique English pine flooring. It's the creative side of my home office...along with my grandmothers Bernina and a vintage sewing table from eBay.

We struggle in our small house to find storage so I ditched the only extra bed we had in the house for this. Since we rarely have guests, it makes sense.

As I mentioned earlier, my husband notices everything. When he got back from his haircut today, he told me all about the makeup another hair dresser was wearing. Ain't no furniture hiding going on under his roof!

How wonderful is that - by posting the link to the piece, another person 'here' has great plans for it. I'll admit that I thought bathroom vanity the minute I saw it. Congrats to you both for beautiful pine cabinets!

Omgosh Spanish, that armoire is fabulous!!!! If it is wide enough could you fit it with a pull-down twin bed? I am in love with that piece! I have an English dresser made to my specifications in England from 200 year old pine. It took forever to make and ship, and now has pride of place in DS2's bedroom. (In our former farmhouse it reigned in a great room.) I also have a scrubbed pine secretary made in Holland of vintage wood (not antique). I absolutely LOVE pine and if I hadn't inherited so much mahogany I would have an all-pine furniture house.

Thanks kswl. I'd love to see a pic. She had another piece that was too big for our house, but if I could have found the space..... Without a man in this house, it would be pine, flax linen and magenta!

The room is only 10x10 and I work out of there full time so the other side of the room is my desk and a dresser. The room houses my clothing as well. It's actually our old kitchen, prior to the addition.

Getting rid of the bed made room for my sewing machine. I've wanted a regular place for it so I didn't have to take over the dining room when I wanted to do a project. Setting up and putting away every time often means I find something else to do instead.

We rarely have overnight guests, have a twin air bed in the attic for emergencies and a hotel close by.

Well, that was a short lived CL high!

Converting this piece to a vanity is a bigger project than DH wants to take on anytime in the near future. We're also short on storage space as we're preparing to move, which I kind of forgot in my CL shopping zeal :) So, I'll be reselling the cabinet.

Guess I'll have to look for more vintage cabinets once we actually land in Tennessee!

Bummer. Will it work as an entertainment center or dining room sideboard? Clean it up and turn it for profit!

I think it would work nicely as an entertainment unit or a sideboard. Unfortunately, I have enough of those for my house :)

I actually have a few antique hutches that I love but might sell because I'm still not sure if it's worth it to store them while we sell and then have to move them across the country. Just can't help collecting vintage furniture :)

I did buy the copper pots and DH likes those quite a bit so it wasn't a wasted trip.

Ha! I have two loves, chairs and antique cabinets. I get it. .....so you said you were in OC? North or south? ;)

  • juddgirl2

I'm in North Orange County. There's usually not too many quality vintage items in my immediate area so I've often driven to South OC and Los Angeles area for my CL finds :)

Darn! I have converted 3 antique bureaus to bathroom vanities, and it really isn't difficult. If CA and TN weren't so far from Maine, I would be snapping that up! Post some good pics of it here, and maybe you can find a local buyer.

    my3dogs,

do you have simple instructions or a favorite link on how to convert dressers, etc to vanities? What's the foolproof way? A vessel sink?

I'm also in North OC. I took two trips down to Laguna Niguel for furniture this past weekend. We've been to KA and San Diego for finds. Do drop a note if you end up selling non-project cabinets.

I did one very similar to this in the little house,

    Easton House · More Info

but with a deck mount faucet. It was actually really easy with a drop in sink. I cut the sink opening in the top, removed the center drawer box, and cut back the shelf in the center cabinet for the plumbing.

Be still my heart on the one Errant just posted - Simply incredible!

Nosoccermom, I don't have instructions as each one has been different, but it's as Errant describes. I have one in my first floor powder room that is my largest, and you'll see from the second pic how the third drawer down is cut out. The bottom drawer didn't need any cutting. The top two, I removed the drawer bottoms completely, and left about 4" of the each side attached to the front to hold them in, for easy access to plumbing.

I lucked out with this one, as it had a nice deep top, but my other two are standard 4 drawer dressers, and they have pieces cut out of each drawer of varying shapes and sizes to accommodate the plumbing.

Rough cut! :-) Just done with a skill saw.
This is the one in the basement. That Kohler sink is the ONE that I have found (not wanting to use a vessel sink) that will fit in one of these antique bureaus, and not be too wide from front to back. Often the tops on these are 18" - 19" and I looked long and hard at sink specs to find one that would work.

Second floor - from CL, has the same sink, and I show bureau cutouts.

    Top drawer

    2nd drawer
3rd drawer; bottom didn't need a cut out.

Wow, you make it sound easy, but it's way beyond my DIY or DH's DIY skills.

My3dogs - very pretty vanities! DH modified a vintage cabinet to use as a vanity for our powder room and modified the drawer to fit the plumbing. So, I know he can do it but I also know he wishes I'd just buy a ready made vanity and save him the trouble :) I love the charming style of converted dressers though and that's the vision I have for our next home.

1929 - I'm about to list this green antique hutch that doesn't work in my DD'S room now that we painted the walls turquoise. Thought about repainting it but it's really a pretty finish and would rather not. Not sure if it's the original paint but looks like it could be.

I also have this primitive red stepback hutch listed on Craigslist right now but keep getting no shows or too low offers and I'm not willing to give it away. I actually had a serious offer but hesitated a bit too long - it was the first antique I bought over 20 years ago and I'm sentimental about it, I guess. I'm thinking I might just find a place to store it for now and take it with us when we move. It might be really sweet to use in the guest house.

I tend to collect waxed antique English pine tables but painted hutches :)

Very nice. I saw your ad for the cabinet. Looking at your pic made me realize he posted a pic of a different cabinet - one with bun feet - than the actual one. Hopefully you can get it sold quickly.

Have you sold your home yet? Inventory is so low here. Thankfully were planning to die in our house, hopefully later rather than sooner. ;) We're further north than you, up by the university.

I'm a bit confused. I was late looking at this thread, so did not see the original CL item because it had been removed. Now I cannot figure out who is selling what from this thread. lol I live in south OC. Could those members currently listing cool cabinets for sale please provide a link?

Funny you mentioned the bun feet - I realized that when I was driving it home and remembered the picture posted had bun feet and also looked smaller. The CL photo seemed more similar to the smaller English pine dresser we use as DD'S nightstand, with bun feet. Maybe they had 2 dressers and 1 sold first. Did you save the picture posted on CL?

It's still a nice piece and is a great size for a bathroom vanity. The right door hinge was loose when I looked at it and broke, I think when they were loading it into my car, although now I'm thinking it would look really nice with the doors off and open shelves for towels and such. It's just more of a project than DH wants to take on right now, and we already have more than enough furniture we already need to move 2000 miles away :)

We're still finishing up some remodel projects before we list the house.

This is the pine cabinet I bought and am now selling because it's taking up valuable real estate in my garage :)

I started this mess with a cabinet on CL that tenfarmhousefixin bought. But it didn't work out so she posted it again under antique pine cabinet in OC CL.

We are all addicted to cabinets. It could be crack, which is easier to hide. But we love the furniture high instead.

TN just posted the last two cabinets which are, or will be, listed on CL as well.

The rest of the photos are furniture porn.

I do think it would look so sweet with a marble top and drop in sink, and maybe open shelves for towels or baskets. Something like this?

  • gyr_falcon

Thanks, tnfarmhousefixin! I found it. I'll have to do some calculating and measuring [someone is showering in there right now :) ] I am assuming the 51" is the widest part/top. The overhang looks to be about 3-3.5" on each side (?), so I am a bit worried that that the base part will be too small for my needs. Of course, I may come up with an idea for another use for it.

  • juddgirl2

gry_falcon - yes, the top is 51" wide and the base is 46-47" wide :)

  • gyr_falcon

Our current vanity is 55". 51" would have been ok, but 47" probably would be too much of a reduction for that bathroom's space. But I might have another use for it--will sleep on it. Thanks.
