A daylilies 2018

It's finally time to work on the winter blues! No new A daylilies for me this past season, my A daylilies are all old cultivars. Now, something new.....the quote of the day: "The scientific theory I like best is that the rings of Saturn are composed entirely of lost airline luggage".

Anzac blooms great in the shade.

Always blooms on tall, straight scapes that never flop.

A color fast red.

Nice Sherry. The first is my favorite. I'll start posting tomorrow or Wed. My wife and kids are still home from work/school, so I'm going to spend the time with them.

I need some daylily photos to brighten winter.

Abilene Lillian is my favorite A. It was so floriferous last season.

Finally the alphabet posts start. I look forward to seeing everybody's pictures every day.

Sherry, we grow Autumn Minaret too and it is amazing that those tall scapes stand so well.

Debra, we love Abilene Lillian here too. We are looking forward to seeing some seedlings from it bloom this year. I like Armed to the Teeth too.

Aaron Brown has gotten established and gave us some lovely blooms.

Abslute Ripper was absolutely marvelous this year.

Across the Border does not do well for us. This winter is probably going to do serious damage to it.

After the Bite is a healthy vigorous plant.

All Creation Sings is a gorgeous flower but not tall enough for our tastes.

All of My Love to You does well in our garden.

All Riled Up is a good grower but too plain for me.

Also Known As is one of our best whites.

Here's our Apache War Dance--a wonderful grower and late blooming too.

Arnie Oseland is another great grower. I wish it would set seed.

    More to come . . .

Here's Arnie Oseland in a clump.

Ashwood Inferno is a bright orange, jusy like Bob likes.

Ashwood Rings of Saturn is best for up close viewing so you can appreciate the gradations of color.

August Wedding has not proven to be a very vigorous grower for us. That could be because we don't tend to give our whites much attention.

    That's it for me.

A Little Fire Scarecrow and August Cherry are both high on my "if I had room" list. Ashwood Inferno is another one that always draws my eye (but I like oranges)...... My contribution was a surprise to me as it is the closest I've come to lavender in my climate (almost all lavenders are really mauve here). This has some mauve to it, but it does have a definite lavender tint. Perfect form every time last year:.........Maryl

I am thankful for the alphabet starting up. Winter has really been WINTRY so far! I am glad we have deep snow cover since it serves as a blanket of insulation against the extreme low temps we have had for such a long spell. It only gets to a high of about 4 degrees each day, with wind chills of minus -22 degrees overnight. I like knowing my 'babies' are tucked into their winter beds. It seems much of the country is in the deep freeze as well.

I will show all of my daylilies throughout the alphabet even when they are repeats so we can all compare how each looks in different zones. I wish you all a Happy New Year and stay warm!

Sherry, I used Absolute Ripper a lot last year. It didn't set seeds for me (I have heard that it won't), but the pollen is good. I crossed it with Bass Gibson, Fruitful Discovery, Love All Serve All, Cosmic Sensation, Stabia, and The Bride of Dracula. It will be interesting to see what I get when the seedlings bloom in 2019.

Here are the A's that I grow that have not previously been shown:

ADORABLE TIGER: Slow grower and not a high bud count.

ALCHEMIST: Rapid increaser with proliferations on each scape.

ALIENS IN THE GARDEN: Too new to evaluate

APRIL LAQUINTA: I keep moving it, so it is difficult to give a fair review.

APRIL FOOLS: Nothing too spectacular other than it is tall and I was born on April Fools.

ARROGANT BASTARD: Fantastic plant. Bud builder. Goes until frost. Pod and pollen fertile.

ASHWOOD SUMMER SUNSHINE: Nice plant. I like the face.

Really enjoyed the flowers everyone posted. I'm a bit behind and may be that way awhile. Not feeling motivated: my youngest brother died. He had poor health his whole adult life. It was unexpected but in a way not a surprise.

Sherry thank you so much for doing the Alphabet again. We have been experiencing the coldest extended cold snap here since 1947 or 49. At night the temps have gone to as low as -40. No need to qualify that because Celsius and Fahrenheit meet at -40. It lasted well over a week.

Brad I am so sorry for the loss of your brother.

What a stunning display from everyone. Two repeats for me.

African Grape. Good grower. Not a tall plant.

    Ashwood Still Night --Solid plant.

Absolute Treasure. A nice older Stamile

    Ashwood Magic Crystal --Wonderful sculpting

Ashwood Summer Sunshine --vigorous. Should be more widely grown.

Ashwood Dark Side --velvety black, old-fashioned form, will slick in hot afternoon sun.

Ashwood Smoky Joe. Well budded. Like most purples, will show effects of sun.

Aerial Applique --very nice this past year, but probably will not like this winter.

Ancient Royalty --waiting for it to impress.

Aint She Nice --beautiful shade of pink. Seems to be a reliable Stamile.

Alice Lambertson --very reliable here, with nice bluish eye.

Allegheny Skyline --a beautiful flower, but doesn't like hot afternoon sun. Plant hasn't been especially vigorous.

Aquas Azul --we'll see; wish it were 6 inches instead of 5.

Always Tomorrow. This Shooter is reliable and takes a good picture.

    Atlas Shrugged --rugged plant

Admiral's Braid --performance here okay, but not really vigorous

Adamas --grows well, but rather short.

I forgot about the Ashevilles. Nancy, I have about given up on Aaron Brown. In three years, it has given me just a few stunted scapes. Will see what this year brings.

Asheville Mountaineer --color was muddy to me.

Asheville White Winged Dove --jury is out

Asheville Sunlit Rainbow --large flowers; bud count appears to be a problem.

If I had the space I see a lot I would love to add. I think I only have one Ashwood-Still Night, but in the short time I've had it, it has done so well I could easily be persuaded to add more. I didn't take a lot of pictures last summer, my internet service was so bad. I've changed things up so maybe will work better.

Alien contact, an oldie, not a great multiplier but does pretty well otherwise

annabelle's blush, just a great daylily, multiplies nicely and blooms its heart out

Autumn Wood, this photo doesn't show it to best advantage though, really much prettier coloring

    Aztec beauty

Arkansas Post is the one in foreground, not a great daylily but I really like it paired with Brave World

I'm so up for playing this game. It's freezing here too and I'm putting off doing the ironing.

First, I'm sorry to hear about your brother Brad. I lost my younger brother a few months ago also and while he was alienated from the family due to his own actions, we still loved him and it's a very sad thing. Hugs from me.

On to the daylilies ... what jumped out at me so far was A Little Fire Scarecrow, Arrogant Bastard and Ashwood Smoky Joe. I've never grown any of those.

I'll try not to do repeats, but I may have a lot of A daylilies. Here goes.

    A BROTHER TO DRAGONS

    ACCIDENTAL TOURIST

ACROSS THE GALAXY - Really too tender here, doesn't increase.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE - also tender but manages some increase and rebloom

AFTER A WHILE CROCODILE - very, very late

AFTERNOON IN RUFFLES - reliable rebloom - nearly perfect form

    AGAPE LOVE

    AGE OF EMPIRES

ALL ABOUT PINK - a great daylily by Melanie Mason

ALPHA AND OMEGA - Got this with All Things to All Men and like it better

    More to follow.

ANGEL ON A CLOUD - not what I was hoping for

ARNO'S BOW TIE - struggling to live

ASHTON'S GIGGLES - always reblooms and increases very well

Daylily99--Thank. Sounds like a similar situation. My brother too was alienated from the family due to his various issues. In a way it makes it harder. Makes it harder too that my Mom died in June. I really like your Angel in Oz and Apple Venus.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments on my brother's death.

Nancy: Absolute ripper, Ashwood Inferno, and Apache War Dance are really excellent!; Debra--A Little Fire Scarecrow really catches my eye every time you post it! and Avedon, Allegheny Skyline also catches my attention when anyone posts it. Apricot Jade --nicest apricot here, but low bud count

April La Quinta --can throw some marvelous blooms, but like many Petits, often has shorter scapes and has limited bud count.

Daylily99 .....yes, Ava Gardner did well considering it was only planted this past season. I didnt expect to see a bloom but woke up one morning and there she was in all her glory. So glad I added this plant to my gardens . Sometimes when shopping only from pictures online it is hard to tell which will perform well and which will not . It is sort of like buying a pig in a poke.....and some take years to get it right after being installed but Ava hit the ground running and was just lovely . Some like Archeopteryx will work their way out of looking fershimmeled .......others just never do so it is a joy when a plant does what Ava did here and believe me she had a horrendous drought to deal with but came thru with shining colors I highly recommend this plant .

Hi perenn.all ! Good to see you here too sharing your pics. I am so far behind on sorting and naming ........there has got to be an efficient way to do it .......I just haven't figured it out yet !
