I can't help but wonder what the point behind this was - "Treatment of growing trees or plants, e.g. for preventing decay of wood, for tingeing flowers or wood, for prolonging the life of plants". Really?

Sounds like they effectively painted the plant with a UV reactive protein-based paint.

It's neat, and glow-in-dark roses would make a really cool bouquet some times of the year, but I can get those results with silk flowers and paint from a good craft store.

I give it a 4/10 on the mad science scale

fluorescence is always cool, points for using romantic flowers, plenty of scientific jargon, E. Coli use adds the horror element.

Points deducted for: it's basically bacterial spray paint and UV lights. I can get the same effect without a fancypants lab. No examples given for how this would be "useful in the field of horticulture and the like."
