Need Area Rug help!!

Jeanne Hamilton

I’m trying to decide on an area rug. I like a Boho type look with white/gray/black. Found an 8x10 I like but doesn’t extend enough to get my chair on. That’s the white one. I have a sample 5x7 pictured(gray crisscross) I can get in 9x12. Which is better?

The white one is much more interesting and feels better in this room

Thank you! Is it ok if my chair is off the rug?

It looks like the chair is partially on. Are there 3 rugs there?

Can you buy a larger in the one I said I liked?

Those are the three I’m trying out. It can be partially on. It doesn’t come larger.

The one I like that looks "tribal" for lack of a better word, does not even go under the sofas.

So, maybe the bottom one.....but I cannot see that one.

Tribal one if your furniture can be tweaked (moved)

They way to do this is

    1) Arrange furniture in the best way

    2) Based on that arrangement, decide what size rug would be best.

    3) Based on that size, choose a rug.

    Does that make sense?

Are you referring to the white or gray rug?

It can go under sofas. We just didn’t arrange it yet.

This is the one I originally bought but we don’t like how thin it is. My husband likes sift. :)

I think the grey rug with diamonds is too close a color to the furniture.

    I like this rug.

    (Bottom one I cannot see)

Okay. I am familiar with that rug. It is on the thinner side

Can you show a photo of all 4 walls of the room please?

Here is the white rug arranged under furniture. Is it big enough? The 9x12 beige rug above seemed to make the room seem larger but we like the look of the white better. Just wish it was a 9x12.

I think that rug is fine and size fine.

Although, I have not seen entire room. I will say with a rug like that, you have to be careful selecting other choices for the room. The rug becomes the star.

Example, the clocks look really busy with the rug. They are rather imposing on that wall anyway,

There are usually three pics above tv. Haha! Just took a wreath down.

Can you put the tv on this wall, so that foot traffic is not walking in front of tv?

The wall goes up two stories so I felt I needed something to fill up space. What else could I put there?

If I put tv on opposite wall, I’m not sure where sofas could go that would leave a place to walk.

A pad under a rug can make it feel more luxurious and help with muffling sound.

Okay. I know the space is tight.

You don't need to fill every wall and you put art at eye level no matter how high the ceilings are.

Yvonne- I have a rug pad but quality is still not good on rug. CDR design- I just had two clocks there before and it seemed so empty. Maybe if I had a big piece of art, it would be better. Just hard to find.

The clock thing is sort of out of trend now. I'd put tall plants on one wall and maybe African baskets on the other.

Here’s a better view. Baskets on wall above couch? We want to keep our wood art. I know the clocks aren’t in anymore but they’re hard to part with. I will eventually.

Okay. It is just that the arts on the 2 walls are competing with each other. My thought.

As long as you love it, that's what is important.

What if I replaced clocks with these shelves or plant prints? Still too much?

I kill every plant I get! Typically I have a tall one in corner where my tree is but they don’t usually last long!

I'd get three tall fake plants to sit on the console. Then some sort of art for the angled wall.

What you have over the console table just does not look appealing. I am sorry....is that the one you really like?

I thought you meant the art over the couch was competing. That’s what I like

  • PRO

Yes.....art over sofa (seems there is a table back there?) in competing with the clocks. It is also a lot of heavy stuff. The art is hung really high in relation to the sofa.

You seem to like it all....that is okay. You should have what you like in your house!

I’ve thought of just getting rid of table but need a light there. I’ve been telling my husband to lower the pic but it’s a job since the art is extremely heavy! If I kept the art there, what could I do to replace clocks?

Notice the sofa is not centered on the art. I'd get that fixed.

Console table: either get a wider one and add 2 buffet lamps to it.

    or

remove the console table/add a lamp and end table to the other side of the sofa.

For the clock wall, can you take a photo from way back? My first thought is nothing on that wall.

Here’s the photo. I’m afraid it would look very empty without anything

  • PRO

    Thanks. I would

    -move the art down

    -get a wider console table

-add 2 lamps to the table

    -remove the clocks

-move the leather chair closer to the sofa

-add a tall arc lamp where the floor lamp is

  • Jeanne Hamilton

Wouldn’t the lamps block the art above table? Seems that would be busy. The floor lamp is an arc lamp.

Not if you got a longer console table.

Nope, not busy at all, but you and I have a different idea of "busy".
