A volunteer gift

A number of years ago this crab seedling showed up at my curb...literally next to cement curb in front of a dying city maple. It not only survived the crew cutting the maple down but the stump grinding that followed as well. With that will to live, I moved it away from the curb to see what would become of it. Well, its now a reliable bloomer with a nice candelabra shape and has only required a bit of pruning to keep it away from the sidewalk and out of the road. Not bad for a curb crab.

That’s glorious for a random seedling. Is there a likely parent in the street?

Nice, but the question is how disease resistant is it? Our neighbor has a Profusion Crabapple, and we see an occasional seedling on the vacant lot nearby. If I thought the seedlings would have good disease resistance, I'd transplant a few.

"has only required a bit of pruning to keep it away from the sidewalk and out of the road " That will become more challenging as the tree gets larger. Your tree lawn isn't really wide enough for a low branched tree that will want to grow broader than tall.

As an aside, I can't read threads from my laptop for some reason.

    Sent houzz message. We'll see.

Thank you for the comments folks.

@Floral- none of the neighborhood crabs seem to have the genetics to combine and produce this. Since it was likely bird planted I guess it could have come from anywhere.

@Arbordave- no sign of disease yet and the upswept form of the main branches is keeping things in bounds for now. The pruning so far has been limited to side shoots.

Yeah, issues with gardenweb -- error message. If I change to houzz dot com instead of gardenweb dot com, it's OK.

    Yah!

    It started working again!

I like the screen size on my laptop a lot more too. :-)

I had typing classes back in 7th grade but never used it until computers came along 25 years later. The training came back to me, like riding a bike, you never forget how, I guess. :-)

Nope, no hothouse wimp here. In fact, we had a three week stretch in February when we got over two feet of snow and the plows piled over six feet of snow on it and the only adverse impact was that the rabbits nipped some branches that high.

Actually, no bees today although it’s cool and cloudy. Barely hit 50F after a night in the low 30s.
