There is a lot of sub-grade drainage going on at the bottom of this particular project, but over that about 4" of compacted quarter minus crushed gravel - we generally don't use sand as it seems to not stay in place as well in the rainy pacific northwest. Because of the variability in thickness of the variegated bluestone, each stone is then leveled by hand
