Wall color

Wall color ... but I would be very scared if I was your client and found this post! ;-)

That's not to say that the recess or niche area of the wall couldn't be a color designed to coordinate with the furnishings or art. however, you only asked about the ceiling beam. Looks like your lighting is set up to receive something special in the niche.

We have beams in our living room they were stained a dark walnut which made tge riim appear smaller we have a matte white in the walls and painted the beams the same white but in a semi-gloss for a subtle contrast

I am not a guy, but I suggest:

That is not a beam; it is a soffit. Ceilings look 8', ceiling looks smooth, ( too many recessed for the space). Recommend the soffit be the wall color.

Seems to be a bulkhead. Unless you have something special planned for the area under the bulkhead, I would paint it the same colour as the wall like this:

I wouldn't recommend you paint the underside of the bulkhead like the ceiling it will look chopped-up like this:
