Sleep in your guest bedroom a few times to note issues, noise, light, window coverings

to block light, pillows, bed comfort. Too many decorative pillows are a hassle as is very heavy bed coverings and too many knock knacks on every surface to maneuver around.

Bedside tables on each side of the bed--goes without saying how important these are!

First and foremost: hosts, please don’t over-decorate your guest rooms!! You may love your grandmother’s antique so-and-so, dried flowers, fake decorative grass etc, but your guests have no use for that....they need space to move around the room and place their things. And in rooms with a “double” bed (queen or king), PLEASE have a small bedside table on BOTH sides, so that people don’t have to put their iPad, phone, books, glasses etc on the floor....a pet-peeve of mine. For one of our guest rooms (it is an ok size but not super big) we decided on a queen bed (a king would have felt a bit squeezed), installed wall sconces for reading on each side and replaced bedside tables with floating walnut tables (for two surfaces) on the wall....what a difference that makes! (Getting more free floor space also makes cleaning easier, and the chair, bench and dresser now have plenty of room.) We have art and a mirror on the walls but the tables are bare, with the exception of sconce and fan remotes, a box of Kleenex and coasters with water bottles. (Luckily there’s is a sizable walk-in closet for luggage racks, clothing, extra pillows, blankets etc.) All other supplies are housed in the en-suite bathroom closet, which all guests are shown upon arrival.
