Dallas Boy’s Bedroom Infused With Vibrant Color
A designer uses bold green walls and playful accessories to turn a former dining room into an energetic bedroom
Johnston Larkin added built-in bookshelves on both sides of the window for storage, and also to have display place for the boy’s favorite books, trophies and knickknacks. “The great thing about designing a kids’ room is that they already have so many accessories that they want to show off,” the designer says. “I just help them curate their selection.”
The walls behind the shelves are covered in a blue-and-white wallpaper with a weave pattern. The cabinet doors below have an Art Deco design and brass pulls that pop against the green paint.

The bed, nightstand and lamp will age well along with the room’s inhabitant. The upholstered headboard is covered in an abstract pinstripe pattern. “While this room is energetic and fun, it’s also pretty sophisticated,” Johnston Larkin says. “He can always swap out accessories or change paint colors when he gets older, but the main pieces will age well.”

Johnston Larkin found these figurine wall climbers online and thought they’d be ideal to hang on the wall opposite the bed. “I always like to flank pieces of art on a wall with something, whether it’s more art or light sconces, but these toy figures were the perfect touch for a boy’s bedroom,” the designer says.

Size: About 175 square feet (16 square meters)
Designer: Emily Johnston Larkin
In order for their three boys to have their own bedrooms, these Dallas homeowners called on designer Emily Johnston Larkin to transform a rarely used formal dining room into a bedroom for their 9-year-old son. “Creating a bedroom that was bold and fun but also something that he could grow into was key,” Johnston Larkin says.
The walls of the vibrant space are painted in Grasshopper by Sherwin-Williams — an energetic green that sets the tone for the room. The designer worked in various cooler blues via the bedding, rug, window shade and accessories to balance the room. Touches of wood are also featured to add warmth.
