Fluted
Rounded, vertical grooves make the cut in this style for columns, furniture and more
Fluted architecture elements have rounded grooves cut vertically into them. Fluted items are typically stone or wood and include columns, pilasters and furniture. This detail began with the removal of tree bark from tree trunks, which left grooves in the trunk. The look was later simulated in stone to create leaner, taller-appearing columns.
This is a round tapered and fluted column, wider at the base and narrower at the top.
These squared columns are fluted from the base to the capital.
There is a small section of fluting on the columns of this mantel, which makes it easy to see the the ends are rounded.
The fluting in the center of this pilaster has a corbel (carved brace) and two arcades (the rectangular areas above and below).
The fluting on these kitchen cabinets is created with a router, which is a tool with a spinning bit that is able to make precise small cuts.
