You mentioned the cost effectivity of gabion cages, However, the cost of filling it with clean-cut stones or wood was not mentioned. I am just wondering.

As with any project, the cost will depend on what materials you use. In the wall that I built, we used some lava stone that was donated and then purchased more stone that was very inexpensive. I wanted to add some bling to the wall and so purchased a small amount of glass rock. That was pretty pricey and we could never have afforded to build the whole wall with the glass.

I do not like these for residential applications. They look raw and primitive and frankly like a cost saving measure. But I see them on ranches in Oklahoma to stabilize fence posts. There they seem fine.
