Living in the middle of a field, I found that I needed deep edging to keep out the grass which spreads by underground roots. I used 8" deep plastic edging. It's not easy to install when there are stones to contend with, but pounded down to level, it barely shows and does the job. It's hard to find the 8" stuff, though it's available through Gardener's Supply (though pricey). I also use it to contain my lily-of-the-valley, which I love, but which was taking over.
