Large angular, gray granite boulders screen some utilities. Pea gravel and gray granite cobbles are the elements of this dry garden. The dry garden is an important element in Japanese garden design. Simple lush green plantings mass around the existing paper birch.

Many different sizes of rocks and boulders were placed with utmost care to mimic the way a natural stream would look with small grasses and carexs lining the sides.

Garden Design, Inc. This was the old pool house with the rest room that the clients wanted to keep so it has been transformed to a Japanese Garden Structure. There is a path between the wood lattice and the house to enter the rest room. There is a bench under the red protruding wood for sitting and contemplating the zen garden in front.

This compact, urban backyard was in desperate need of privacy. We created a series of outdoor rooms, privacy screens, and lush plantings all with an Asian-inspired design sense. Elements include a covered outdoor lounge room, sun decks, rock gardens, shade garden, evergreen plant screens, and raised boardwalk to connect the various outdoor spaces. The finished space feels like a true backyard oasis.

This early-phase Japanese-inspired garden draws from the Buddhist, Shinto, and Taoist philosophies and combines the basic elements of plants, water, and rocks along with simple, clean lines to create a tranquil backyard retreat. Plant material used includes Japanese varieties of trees, shrubs and perennials woven together to create interest throughout each season.
