ASID Design Excellence First Place Residential – Kitchen and Bathroom: Michael Merrill Design Studio was approached three years ago by the homeowner to redesign her kitchen. Although she was dissatisfied with some aspects of her home, she still loved it dearly. As we discovered her passion for design, we began to rework her entire home--room by room, top to bottom.

About five years ago, these homeowners saw the potential in a brick-and-oak-heavy, wallpaper-bedecked, 1990s-in-all-the-wrong-ways home tucked in a wooded patch among fields somewhere between Indianapolis and Bloomington. Their first project with SYH was a kitchen remodel, a total overhaul completed by JL Benton Contracting, that added color and function for this family of three (not counting the cats). A couple years later, they were knocking on our door again to strip the ensuite bedroom of its ruffled valences and red carpet—a bold choice that ran right into the bathroom (!)—and make it a serene retreat. Color and function proved the goals yet again, and JL Benton was back to make the design reality. The clients thoughtfully chose to maximize their budget in order to get a whole lot of bells and whistles—details that undeniably change their daily experience of the space. The fantastic zero-entry shower is composed of handmade tile from Heath Ceramics of California. A window where the was none, a handsome teak bench, thoughtful niches, and Kohler fixtures in vibrant brushed nickel finish complete the shower. Custom mirrors and cabinetry by Stoll’s Woodworking, in both the bathroom and closet, elevate the whole design. What you don't see: heated floors, which everybody needs in Indiana. Fu-Tung Cheng, CHENG Design • Bathroom featuring Stainless Steel Trough Sink, Mammoth Lakes home The entry way is the focal point of this mountain home, with a pared concrete wall leading you into a "decompression" chamber as foyer - a place to shed your coat and come in from the cold in the filtered light of the stacked-glass skylight. The earthy, contemporary look and feel of the exterior is further played upon once inside the residence, as the open-plan spaces reflect solid, substantial lines. An existing bath under the eaves was updated with new skylights, glass tile, Icestone counter top and shower threshold and seat, ultra clear frameless shower surround, large vanity sink with his and hers faucets, custom vanity and LED lighting throughout.

Submersive Bath Western Mass Builder: Woody Pistrich design team: Natalie Leighton photographs: Tim Hess This multi-leveled bathroom has a tub three and a half feet lower than the first floor. The space has been organized to create a progressive journey from the upper wash area, to the lower tub space. The heated stairs, tub slab and green sea tile that wraps around the entire room was inspired by the progressive immersion of the Turkish baths.

This family vacation home sadly burned to the ground in the recent Northern California 2017 fires. Years of remodeling and decorating had just been completed, photographed a few months ago. All four generations so enjoyed get aways to this Napa retreat which centered on nature, relaxing and family. Lots of fun curvy shaped upholstery, color and art flowed with the wonderful chaos of lots of families being together. When I spoke to them on the phone, they were still in shock but said they planned to rebuilt and wanted me to be part of it.
