Venetian Stairs
For the Shaheen remodel we removed the half “pony” walls and installed “over the post” 6210 Railing. We also removed the half wall on the right lower section - extending the treads all the way to the adjacent wall and eliminating the narrow gap between the lower section and the upper section of stairs.
We removed the laminate flooring on the treads and installed 5/4 “1inch” Solid Oak treads and Painted Risers.
Additionally we took out the wrought iron balcony rail on the 2nd floor and installed wood newels and rail to match the new stairs. With our PC 4/4 double twist balusters, our PC 8/1 24” single twist balusters and our PC 22/3 small thick scroll balusters, all with our Midnight Bronze finish.
We also installed new 5” Wide Oak Plank flooring on the 2nd floor landing area, stained and finished all a Regal Cherry Color with Gloss Polyurethane finish with white risers and skirts.
Castle Building & Remodeling
These homeowners came to Castle looking for a solution that would allow them to stay in their 1946 stucco bungalow in the St. Paul neighborhood that they loved.
What was once a young couple’s starter home (1 ½ story with two bedrooms on the main floor and a tiny attic space) was no longer big enough after having two kids.
The need for more room became the family’s highest priority, so they came to Castle for help creating the space they needed for their growing family.
With very little headroom in the attic, the decision was made to tear off the roof and add a completely new 2nd story addition with three bedrooms, a bathroom, and a commons area.
The stairway to the new 2nd-floor space needed to be rebuilt to comply with code requirements and was extended slightly into the dining room below.
The new 2nd story addition gave the homeowners an opportunity to revise the exterior look of the home with vertical board and batten siding above the 1st-floor stucco.
A new front entry portico was added to compliment the addition, and the existing masonry chimney was extended above the new roof line.
The homeowners took over the work on the project after drywall was installed and did all the interior trim & millwork, tile, flooring, and painting & staining themselves.
They’re loving the results!

Castle Building & Remodeling
Designer: Natalie Hanson
Home Style: Craftsman/Bungalow
Design Style: Transitional
Project Completion Date: December 2016
This project included adding a 2nd floor dormer bathroom to an attic space that already had 2 finished bedrooms, as well as renovating the kitchen. The homeowner was very design savvy and had most of the materials and fixtures selected before coming to Castle. The kitchen was a full renovation with a new, more functional layout. The cabinets were custom made with traditional details like inset doors and drawers, and stiles that run to the floor to add old character and charm.
The new layout makes the kitchen feel much larger, although no square footage was added or gained from adjoining spaces. A trash/recycling/compost center was added under an existing window, and the homeowner’s original banquette seating area was reinstalled with a new wood top and fresh coat of paint. Soapstone countertops offer a wonderful matte texture that will patina over time. The backsplash is a handmade, traditional craftsman style tile, but in a fresh, modern size to maintain an updated look. Hardwood floors were installed to match the existing in the rest of the home, and traditional fixtures we used to reinforce the old-style charm.
The attic dormer was completed for a new ¾ bathroom on the upper level where the master bedroom was. This modern bathroom oasis features a grand Carrara marble shower with shaving ledge and storage niches, a beautiful porcelain heated tile floor, and new traditional cabinetry to match the new kitchen. The plumbing fixtures, lighting and accessories all enhance the space – adding a little sparkle and keeping with the more traditional feel.
An inset closet and new carpeting were also installed along with the new dormer addition on the 2nd floor finishing out the attic with luxury, comfort and fun accents that reflect the homeowner’s great design eye and personality.
