Entertaining and bringing people together is what this family is all about. Birthdays involve amazing cakes like you see on those TV shows, and groups of 30 people or more. Their ideal kitchen needed to accommodate that level of baking and hosting, but also support the daily rhythms of life.
Our collaborative design was guided by Vastu Shastra, an ancient architectural tradition that predates feng shui. Based on Vedic traditions that harmonize human behavior with natural forces in the world, Vastu Shanstra basically suggests how to inhabit a place in the best way possible.
The objectives were:
-Relocate the entire kitchen so the home’s heat source (oven) is in the southeast
-Incorporate symmetry into the overall design
-Create a large space for entertaining – open and airy with lots of light
-Simultaneously separate but join cooking and gathering spaces, allowing the cook to have a cook-specific zone that is still a part of any gathering
-Individual storage for small appliances – making them easier to use
-Simplicity – the space should be easy to use and maintain
Design challenges we solved for:
-Incorporate three load bearing points of the house
-Provide structural support that was not obvious
-Reconfigure kitchen utilities to another part of the home
-Maximize storage space
Design solutions and mindful innovations became an exciting motivation that drove the project:
-Double-horseshoe design features two symmetrical islands that seat 18 people comfortably
-Downdraft ventilation behind rangetop allows unobstructed views
-Overhead beams for structural support
-Equip nearby dining room with locking bar and wine cabinet
-Roll-out appliance shelves on back of cooking island are powered for easy use
-Symmetrical fridge and freezer columns separated by oven
-Cabinets along back of the cooking area for everyday items
-Tall pantry cabinet has four drawers for paperwork
-Spacious walk-in storage pantry has a counter with power outlets
-Coffee station has a trash can directly below for easy clean up
-Two sinks and dishwashers for easy cleanup
“A lot of relationships are built over food,” the homeowner told us. “This [kitchen] keeps our family close because we all love food. My kids sit in the kitchen all evening long every day – and I’m right there cooking. That’s life –to be together.”
We also collaborated with the homeowners to remodel their primary bathroom, primary bedroom closet and an additional bathroom.

Creating several comfortable and functional outdoor rooms in this urban backyard was the primary goal. 1) A deck with outdoor kitchen elements and built in seating. 2) Bluestone terrace with fire pit sits 18" above the soccer-lawn. 3) The garage rooftop allows for complete separation and drinks in the garden. 4) Oh, the trampoline pad (under the tree canopy) - I believe that's what triggered this wonderful project!

OPPORTUNITY:
The client felt weighed down by the family heirlooms that she couldn’t bear to part with, but couldn’t imagine them in her own home.
RESULTS
We created a “new traditional” - integrating old family heirlooms and discovering the beauty among the relics. She is now proud to show the history that tells the story of one family.

View from the sitting area into the now-open spaces of a 1960 split-level flat-roof mid-century modern home in Creve Coeur.
Load-bearing walls were removed to create an open plan. Once the Mosby production crew had a steel beam in place, work on the new kitchen began.

A large family of custom-built wood windows and doors are oversized to flood the house with light and create a sense of transparency between the house and the surrounding gardens. This connection to the landscape is strengthened through a number of cut stone and timber porches, in particular, a dramatic cut stone loggia overlooking the backyard. Each of these porches is paved with intricate patterns of cut sandstone and sliced up discarded roofing slates. The cut stone balustrade sits atop the solid load bearing cut stone columns and entablature.
Francis Landscapes
Located in a densely populated region just outside Beirut city this villa and garden are actually a villa and 4 gardens. Narrow and surrounded by walls, these patches of nature are not only introverted, but with the energy emanating from them, also introspective. The mazelike garden paths create a sense of wonder in what would otherwise be a space too small for amazement.
Working on this project was a particular challenge, knowing that the garden was an afterthought, pushing the landscape architects into creating a one with a unique soul.
As a small city garden, it left no room for chance and no detail too small, knowing full well that the sum total can add substantially to the overall energy of the garden. Special attention was paid to the volume of the plants, the size and texture of the foliage, as well as the color gradient, making sure everything was in perfect harmony to give one a sense of being embraced and cradled by the surroundings. The gardens radiate with an energy that cannot leave any visitor indifferent.
Walking from one garden to another, the visitor goes through a succession of green spaces, where new elements appear, terraces planted with fruit bearing trees, big emerald green leafs juxtaposed with lime green shrubs, and, for a meditative pause, patios, pergolas, and built in sitting areas, all ideal to connect with this human sized garden.

Our client felt the main floor of the home was too sectioned off and the kitchen too small. We designed a more open space by removing two load bearing walls, replacing them with engineered beams. We removed the patio door and replaced it with a single door and window to allow us to expand the foot print of the kitchen. When completed the main floor is much more open and light, the old formal living room is now a family room, the old family room is a sitting area and dining area, the kitchen is larger and more functional. A new “mudroom” was created to include a “drop zone”, bench, cubbies and pantry area. An old “wine” area was converted to be more of a butler’s pantry.
The new cabinets are Tedd Wood Landmark in a white shaker style. Custom floating shelves were constructed for the corners and new bay window was installed. Finishing off the project, the powder room was remodeled, new doors on the hall closet and powder room, glass barn door leading to the basement a new entry door were installed. The main stair case was refinished along with the railing and the hardwood floors were refinished.
Shuler Architecture
The Owners of this luxurious waterfront estate acquired this property after the previous owners defaulted on their loan and stopped construction. We were initially engaged to inspect and assess the structural integrity of the building shell and work with a geo-technical engineer to evaluate the condition of the site’s soil. Tests determined that the site’s previous use as a sawmill and Native American fishing ground rendered the soil unfit for construction activity. In response to the lack of soil bearing capacity, our solution employs expansive footings supported by hundreds of piles throughout the entire project site.
After completing our inspection of the structure, we were engaged to completely redesigned this home to accommodate our clients’ growing family and extensive art collection. Stylistically, this highly detailed structure borrows from the grand bungalows of the Greene brothers in Pasadena, California while employing sophisticated climate, lighting, AV and security systems. To ensure our clients’ art collection was properly displayed and protected, we worked with specialists from the Seattle Art Museum to develop appropriate lighting and climate control systems. Finally, we engaged the best craftsman we know – general contractor, interior designer, landscape architect, cabinet maker, blacksmith, custom woodworker and stone mason – to execute what ultimately became our clients’ very personal and unique statement for their home.

The material used for the pleated, sheer, one-way draw drapery that is used at the slider in this sitting room, is repeated in the adjacent dining room and living room. All three areas are visible at once when stepping into the foyer of this newly renovated space.
The sheer material provides softening at the windows and semi-privacy. The owner wanted to be able to view the outdoors through the material, yet maintain semi-privacy during the day.
The ceiling fan, when operating, gently billows the drapery in a slow moving, rippling motion creating a relaxing atmosphere.
The drapery hardware is an H-rail configuration. It provides a simple, clean, low-profile appearance eliminating the need for drapery rings. The drapery is pinned to the enclosed ball bearing carriers encased in the rod and is easily pulled manually with an acrylic baton.

A heavy weight in reclaimed teak furniture.
It weighs in at a massive 110kg’s and is nearly one and a half metres tall and wide - so think carefully about where to put – you may not want to move it twice!
The reclaimed wagon wheel that has been used for the back support can be seen in all its glory in the back view pictured. This photo also demonstrates the way the whole thing is angled back slightly for added comfort.
The mixture of worked reclaimed teak and teak reclaimed from teak in its natural state lends the bench a paradoxical feel unique to this piece.
The smoothed teak feature board in the middle of the front cross support is just begging to be engraved or have a plaque added to further personalise the bench.
Two people can sit comfortably on this reclaimed teak bench and the centre of the wheel bearing is used to good effect as a divider and armrest in the middle of the two shaped seating sections.
The curved, natural teak arms add a different dimension along with the other supporting sections in the same style.
When you consider the work and craftsmanship that has gone to make this impressive bench it’s a bargain at just under £350 – especially when you consider that you’re helping to reduce deforestation in Indonesia as well.
Classic Kitchens Designs & Renovations Ltd.
This home started with a very small kitchen on the left side of the area where the fridge sits, so it wasn't working at all for the homeowner. The new kitchen certainly changed everything when a bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room was converted to a support beam, unifying the two areas and setting the stage for a beautiful new kitchen space with hutch area as well. Dark Maple Cabinetry combined with Quartz countertops and wire brushed wood plank flooring creates a dramatic, yet comfortable feel in the new kitchen space. Glass subway tile was used for the backsplash, further lending to the sleek appearance of this kitchen. Wow!

Strategically planted conifers (cone bearing) evergreen trees provide an attractive, natural living fence offering shade and privacy. Pictured alongside the travertine patio sit a Norway spruce and evergreen trees, and an Edith Bogue Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora ‘Edith Bogue’), all of which decoratively close what was once a wide open space.

2011 CAPITAL COTY HONORABLE MENTION AWARD
Located in the new Trump International Golf Course Community, this contemporary home has a great location overlooking the golf course. The current layout, however, prevented the owners from taking advantage of its breathtaking view.
Goals of the remodel were to open up the first floor layout by taking down the partition walls between the kitchen and dining room. The homeowner also wanted to update the home’s galley kitchen, replacing its dark cabinets and counters.
Once the walls were removed, major obstacles because they were load bearing, the new design could evolve. The ten foot ceilings provided the opportunity to stack up decorative glass cabinetry and highly crafted crown moldings on top, while maintaining a considerable amount of cabinetry right below it. The custom made brush stroke finished cabinetry with bells and whistles such as corbels and chimney style wood hood surrounded with leaded glass cabinetry. Pillars were all part of detailed craftsmanship of this project.
A large 5’ x 14’ island is the focal point of the design. The island consists of main sink with a pedal style control disposal, dishwasher, microwave, second bar sink, beverage center refrigerator and still has room to sit five to six people. Its darker cabinetry provides a beautiful contrast to the opaque white cabinets on the surrounding walls.
White marble counters and backsplash brighten up the kitchen and two crystal chandeliers create a timeless yet elegant feel. High-end Thermador appliances covered in custom inset panels are part of this featured project to implement the classic look the homeowner wanted for this kitchen. Finally, a featured cabinet arch with leaded glass separates the kitchen from the dining room and displays the homeowner’s fine china.
Finally, large windows and French doors offer beautiful golf course views from multiple vantage points.
