The addition of a new covered front porch really expands the front of this 1950's home... a newly redesigned and constructed cover entry changes this home's look and feel. We were able to update the exterior finishes at the same time, replacing the old windows with new dark framed more energy efficient windows. The exterior trim is now all pvc; this lowers maintenance and upkeep. New fiber cement lap and shake siding improve weather durability. Proper overhangs give an added architectural details while improving rainwater control and weather protection. Square tapered columns accent the stained, craftsmen style, douglas fir wood front door. The entire porch has some type of stone - Eldorado stone veneer faces the foundation and porch with natural bluestone on the porch steps and porch floor.

The handsomely crafted porch extends the living area of the home’s den by 250 square feet and includes a wood burning fireplace faced with stone. The Chilton stone on the fireplace matches the stone of an existing retaining wall on the site. The exposed beams, posts and 2” bevel siding are clear cedar and lightly stained to highlight the natural grain of the wood. The existing bluestone patio pavers were taken up, stored on site during construction and reconfigured for paths from the house around the porch and to the garage. A new random pattern, full range color bluestone carriage walk allows visitors to approach the home even if a car is parked in the drive. The existing drive was sawcut, and a tumbled limestone band was added to signal arrival for vehicles.

The porch roof was temporarily held up with jacks while the landscape contractor removed the old concrete slab and rotted posts. A 75-foot long continuous concrete frost wall (8” thick and 42” deep) was framed and poured, as was a new sub-floor for the wrap-around porch. The porch floor was finished in full-range, dimensioned bluestone — and new wood columns were installed.

Mr. and Mrs. Page commissioned me to design a home with an open floor plan and an Arts and Crafts design aesthetic. Because the retired couple meant to make this house their "forever home", I incorporated aging-in-place principles. Although the house clocks in at around 2,200 s.f., the massing and siting makes it appear much larger. I minimized circulation space and expressed the interior program through the forms of the exterior. Copious number of windows allow for constant connection to the rural outdoor setting as you move throughout the house.
