The translucent garage door lights up the driveway at night. On the street elevation, the proportions of the house is scaled down to bring it to a pedestrian level, while also creating a sense of privacy.

Los Angeles, CA - Garage conversions are in high demand in the LA metropolitan area. Homeowners are turning their garages into home offices, playrooms, entertainment rooms as well as home gyms etc. The biggest challenge of a conversion is the garage door. Most homes have rollup garage doors or tilt ups that are an eye sore and make the room feel just like a garage!
Our custom carriage doors are designed with the utmost attention to detail and functionality. They are built to work like entry doors with a full perimeter seal and ease of use. Unlimited design options and materials are available.
This particular carriage garage door is a two-car opening with two large carriage door leafs that open at the center. Additionally, we built fully functional awning windows that make it a breeze to work in the newly converted garage (no pun intended). The design was a traditional craftsman style to harmonize with the home's traditional architecture. Our carriage doors are all one-of-a-kind and can be replicated for your home or our in-house designers can design a whole new design just for you!

The renovation of the Woodland Residence centered around two basic ideas. The first was to open the house to light and views of the surrounding woods. The second, due to a limited budget, was to minimize the amount of new footprint while retaining as much of the existing structure as possible.
The existing house was in dire need of updating. It was a warren of small rooms with long hallways connecting them. This resulted in dark spaces that had little relationship to the exterior. Most of the non bearing walls were demolished in order to allow for a more open concept while dividing the house into clearly defined private and public areas. The new plan is organized around a soaring new cathedral space that cuts through the center of the house, containing the living and family room spaces. A new screened porch extends the family room through a large folding door - completely blurring the line between inside and outside. The other public functions (dining and kitchen) are located adjacently. A massive, off center pivoting door opens to a dramatic entry with views through a new open staircase to the trees beyond. The new floor plan allows for views to the exterior from virtually any position in the house, which reinforces the connection to the outside.
The open concept was continued into the kitchen where the decision was made to eliminate all wall cabinets. This allows for oversized windows, unusual in most kitchens, to wrap the corner dissolving the sense of containment. A large, double-loaded island, capped with a single slab of stone, provides the required storage. A bar and beverage center back up to the family room, allowing for graceful gathering around the kitchen. Windows fill as much wall space as possible; the effect is a comfortable, completely light-filled room that feels like it is nestled among the trees. It has proven to be the center of family activity and the heart of the residence.

Our clients wanted to create a room that would bring them closer to the outdoors; a room filled with natural lighting; and a venue to spotlight a modern fireplace.
Early in the design process, our clients wanted to replace their existing, outdated, and rundown screen porch, but instead decided to build an all-season sun room. The space was intended as a quiet place to read, relax, and enjoy the view.
The sunroom addition extends from the existing house and is nestled into its heavily wooded surroundings. The roof of the new structure reaches toward the sky, enabling additional light and views.
The floor-to-ceiling magnum double-hung windows with transoms, occupy the rear and side-walls. The original brick, on the fourth wall remains exposed; and provides a perfect complement to the French doors that open to the dining room and create an optimum configuration for cross-ventilation.
To continue the design philosophy for this addition place seamlessly merged natural finishes from the interior to the exterior. The Brazilian black slate, on the sunroom floor, extends to the outdoor terrace; and the stained tongue and groove, installed on the ceiling, continues through to the exterior soffit.
The room's main attraction is the suspended metal fireplace; an authentic wood-burning heat source. Its shape is a modern orb with a commanding presence. Positioned at the center of the room, toward the rear, the orb adds to the majestic interior-exterior experience.
This is the client's third project with place architecture: design. Each endeavor has been a wonderful collaboration to successfully bring this 1960s ranch-house into twenty-first century living.

Eco-Rehabarama house. This dining space is adjacent to the kitchen and the living area in a very open floor-plan. We converted the garage into a kitchen and updated the entire house. The red barn door is made from recycled materials. The hardware for the door was salvaged from an old barn door. We used wood from the demolition to make the barn door. This image shows the entire barn door with the kitchen table. The door divides the laundry and utility room from the dining space. It's a practical solution to separate the two spaces while adding an interesting focal point to the room. Love the pop of red against the neutral walls. The door is painted with Sherwin Williams Red Obsession SW7590 and the walls are Sherwin Williams Warm Stone SW 7032.

The scope called for a workshop that offers abundant and flexible space for various projects types, including custom pipe organs. But, the structure could not appear too large and imposing on the property. In other words, it had to be just right. The structure is nestled around an old growth tree, and partially buried into the hillside to address the scale. And, as an ‘out building’, we had the freedom to treat the shop’s style differently than the main house. Thus, clipped gables and an arched dormer and doors are employed give the structure a small and quaint feel. The ceiling is vaulted for tall projects, and carriage style doors made by the homeowner allow for large objects to move in and out.
