Project Entry: The Potager Garden at Stonebridge Mansion
2013 PLNA Awards for Landscape Excellence Winner
Category: Theme Garden
Award Level: Bronze
Project Description:
The Potager Garden at Stonebridge Mansion was completed as part ofthe Oxford Arts Alliance 2011Decorator's Showcase. The Garden is a fun and productive garden featuring culinary & medicinal herbs, vegetables, and sustainable gardening concepts. Many sustainable practices can be seen throughout the project such as a compost bin, a rain water harvesting system, and use of many native herbs and vegetables.
A Potager is a French term for an ornamental vegetable garden or kitchen garden. We made sure to keep that in mind as we designed the space. By using a number of herbs that have both culinary and medicinal use we are trying to encourage the public to find more sustainable, home grown options for their own food and medicine. The project also features a vertical herbal wall which is a new idea taking shape in the industry. The wall allows you to provide herbs and vegetables with an optimum growing environment while saving an exorbitant amount of space. It gives people with limited space or poor growing conditions, such as people who live in cities an opportunity to grow their own herbs and vegetables. In addition to the herb wall, vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, beans, tomatoes, and many more can be seen throughout the garden. The garden is located adjacent to the kitchen of the residence to further enhance the garden to table idea. We hope that after seeing this fun themed garden people can both enjoy the space, but also try to apply many of the practices we show to their own landscape. We encouraged visitors to stroll through,or sit awhile in our garden, and learn about rain water harvesting, food crops, vertical gardening, and more!

Project Entry: Whitemarsh Clock
2013 PLNA Awards for Landscape Excellence Winner
Category: Commerical Hardscaping $15,000 - $30,000
Award Level: Honorable Mention
Project Description:
Whitemarsh Memorial Park, a burial estate created in 1929, services Philadelphia's growing northern suburbs. The Whitemarsh clock identifies one comer of the estate at its busiest intersection. It has been a prominent area landmark for the past 80 years. Major landscape upgrades within the memorial park were underway and new signage had recently been installed. Now it was time to give the clock a facelift with a fresher, easier to maintain landscape design that would look great no matter the season.
Larger heavily pruned evergreens looked out-of-date, years of planting and replanting seasonal flowers resulted in a misshapen clock face, and the seasonal plantings within the face often hid the hour and minute hands. The designer's solution was to create a bolder and permanent focal point. The clock face would be recreated with block and stone, while landscape material would be carefully chosen for proper scale and ease of maintenance.
Unique problems to the project included:
• Determine and restore the original size and shape of the clock face
• The significant change-in-grade of the site
• Plant choice and location to complement, rather than overpower the focal point
The overall size of the clock face had decreased and the shape distorted after years of planting and replanting seasonal flowers. The hour and minute hands were measured to help determine the original size of the clock face. Black jumbo Belgian blocks were set in concrete with mortared joints to permanently define its shape. Additional blocks were used to identify five-minute increments while boxwoods were installed to mark the hours. Placement of these blocks and boxwoods had to be exact. After all, every motorist sitting at the intersection waiting for the light to change would surely notice any misalignment. The face was then filled with %" white stone to set-off the hour and minute hands which were painted black.
The change-in-grade presented an interesting challenge in the design, especially the hour markers as they are prominent features of the clock face, second only to the hands. Boxwoods were an obvious choice - evergreen, formal and relatively easy to keep healthy and looking their best. However, due to the abrupt change-in-grade and resulting perspective as the clock is viewed from the intersection, short and rounded boxwoods were installed versus the conical and slightly taller boxwoods as was originally planned. Additionally, the seasonal planting area now fully abuts the clock face, eliminating the narrow grass strip that once required mowing on a steep slope.
Lastly, memorial park management desired plant material that provided interest throughout the year yet required fewer maintenance hours. Time spent planning and planting the clock face were decreased by simply relocating the seasonal planting area from the face to the base of the clock. Meanwhile, trees and shrubs that do double duty- Autumn Flowering Cherry, Boomerang Lilac and Henry's Gamet Itea - were installed to supply interest over several seasons.
The opportunity to improve on a community landmark doesn't come around very often. Because the site is well-known the revision had to be respectful to the original design, the clock shape exact and the plant material chosen for its longevity. After all, the result will be referred to and seen by countless people for many, many years to come.

Five Star Tree Care
One frustrating thing about tree infections and diseases is that they are virtually completely unpredictable. It is essential to understand all the different types of risks and causes that can contribute to these issues in an attempt to understand how you can try and prevent and manage these things when they happen. Five Star Tree Services is going to go over the reasons as to how and why your trees can develop these certain issues.
Since there are so many different causes behind why a tree’s development might be interrupted, first think of them as two different categories you can split them into; non-living factors or abiotic, and living factors or biotic. We also want to note that it is possible for more than one factor to affect a tree’s health and development at any given time.
You can also make a distinction between primary pests and secondary pests. The primary pests exert a serious influence on the tree’s immediate survival. Whereas secondary pests have a less significant influence on the survival of the tree. The only time they will jeopardize a tree’s survival is if the tree has a previous debilitating issue from another risk factor.
For an individual tree’s circumstances, this will distinct the chances of an infestation, especially if it has any past debilitating issues. Which can be seen from any compromising management practices or pre-existing issues which affect the tree’s development as well as lower its resistance to infections.
Poor management in planting is a very common predisposed factor that compromises a tree’s infection defense. For instance, any saplings that are pot-bound will not get to develop solid root systems which doesn’t allow them to develop properly when they eventually get planted. Another example is when a tree gets stressed, along with other outer factors, will have significant effects on the overall wellbeing of the tree and its condition. Other factors to consider are bad soil quality as well as bad drainage.
Abiotic Non-Living Influences
The overall health of a tree can be linked to impacts such as bad growing conditions and bad soil quality. These things will put trees at a higher risk for catching a number of different biotic issues. Sickness, infections, and infestation can all be linked to ineffective nutrient absorption when a tree has insufficiently developed its natural resistances and defenses. One of the worst factors for this is fire damage. It is so debilitating that it makes trees hopeless at defending themselves against biotic attacks.
To uncover what circumstantial predispositions your tree might have due to poor developmental conditions, arborists can use the growth rings as a means of assessment for the long-term effects, wellbeing, and growth of a tree.
There are many outer and non-living variables that will influence the health of a tree and if it will be predisposed to biotic infestations. Such variables can include things like extensive cold winters and long dry spells.
Abiotic Common Influences Include:
-Water
-Chemicals
-Soil Conditions
-Weather
-Mechanical Agents
Biotic Living Influences
Sometimes, you are able to notice certain infestations easily, while others can be hard to tell. For instance, seeing an insect on a tree is no cause for alarm. A lot of them are harmless to the tree and do not cause harm while they regularly feed. However, some insects are actually harmful to a tree’s survival and knowing the difference between harmless and harmful ones is what you need to notice.
You might also see fungi on rotting matter or a dead tree. Fungi are not usually the immediate influence of a negative manifestation found in a tree’s development. There are other growths that can be seen living on trees. These include saprobic and pathogenic organisms. Saprobic growths are mostly found on rotting or dead tissues and pathogenic growths are less common. Some other living infestations include lichens, epiphytes, and mosses. But these don’t usually have any effect on a tree’s wellbeing. They live symbiotically together.
Biotic Common Influences Include:
-Mites
-Deer and Rodents
-Fungi
-Weeds
-Viruses
-Parasitic Plants
-Bacteria
-Phytoplasmas
-Insects
