Alchemy Architecture
The challenges for this site included the need to integrate the existing European Brick Tudour style façade at the front of the property with a new modern extension at the back, but in a seamless way. The new design also needed to accommodate all seasons, and various levels of natural light, to ensure year-round use of the rear entertainment space. Although a difficult brief, our client’s clarity, courage and trust allowed us to transform a tricky brief into a practical, holistic and creative solution. The result included a large overhang angled roof structure, which flips up to capitalise on natural light. This, along with an oversized exterior retractable blind system, assisted in creating the perfect all season multi-use space—one that can be fully controlled to obtain the perfect balance of comfort in every weather condition.

Constructing an ADU at a property is cumbersome, complex and time-taking. But, with the help of general contractors like “Elvire Development '', an ADU-garage conversion in Temple City, seems like a cakewalk, as they have the professionals to carry out a project to perfection, and in a relatively seamless manner by obtaining all the necessary permits.

Our client bought a Hacienda styled house in Hove, Sussex, which was unloved, and had a dilapidated pool and garden, as well as a tired interior.
We provided a full architectural and interior design service through to completion of the project, developing the brief with the client, and managing a complex project and multiple team members including an M and E consultant, stuctural engineer, specialist pool and glazing suppliers and landscaping designers. We created a new basement under the house and garden, utilising the gradient of the site, to minimise excavation and impact on the house. It contains a new swimming pool, gym, living and entertainment areas, as well as storage and plant rooms. Accessed through a new helical staircase, the basement area draws light from 2 full height glazed walls opening onto a lower garden area. The glazing was a Skyframe system supplied by cantifix. We also inserted a long linear rooflight over the pool itself, which capture sunlight onto the water below.
The existing house itself has been extended in a fashion sympathetic to the original look of the house. We have built out over the existing garage to create new living and bedroom accommodation, as well as a new ensuite. We have also inserted a new glazed cupola over the hallway and stairs, and remodelled the kitchen, with a curved glazed wall and a modern family kitchen.
A striking new landscaping scheme by Alladio Sims has embeded the redeveloped house into its setting. It is themed around creating a journey around different zones of the upper and lower gardens, maximising opportunities of the site, views of the sea and using a mix of hard and soft landscaping. A new minimal car port and bike storage keep cars away from the front elevation of the house.
Having obtained planning permission for the works in 2019 via Brighton and Hove council, for a new basement and remodelling of the the house, the works were carrried out and completed in 2021 by Woodmans, a contractor we have partnered with on many occasions.

Brain Factory - Architecture & Design
2018 Roma, Italy
LOCATION: Roma
AREA: 65 sq. m.
TYPE: Realized project
“Might we suggest that… if the pulsing LED begins to drive you crazy, turn the box round so the LED faces to the wall or the back of your shelf” questo è il suggerimento leggibile all’interno del cartoncino dell’album Pulse dei Pink Floyd da cui scaturisce il concept creativo di questo appartamento di 65 mq situato a Roma: un progetto di interni vivo e pulsante che ben rispecchia l’animo dei proprietari, un musicista e una dottoressa in attesa del primo figlio.
“Might we suggest that… if the pulsing LED begins to drive you crazy, turn the box round so the LED faces to the wall or the back of your shelf” this is the readable suggestion within the Pulse album by Pink Floyd gives rise to the creative concept of this 65 square meter apartment located in Rome: a living and pulsating interior project that well reflects the soul of the owners, a musician and a doctor waiting for their first child. The renovation project has completely upset the living area of the apartment, preferring a large open space obtained by eliminating a long corridor between the kitchen and the living room, while the design proposal in the sleeping area leaves unchanged the two bedrooms and the bathroom. With the new planimetric distribution, right from the entrance, there is a creative emotion that refers to the sensations experienced in perceiving for the first time the heartbeat of the future child: in fact, the rows of artificial grass at various heights recall the display of the heart rate. A part of the living room has been raised and completely covered in oak parquet, to act as a stage for the grand piano, the focal point of the entire living area. Used like a backdrop to the piano there is an absolute white wall on which a decorative painting has been placed that creates a play of lights and shadows. Of great visual and architectural impact was the choice of lights: black lacquered circles of different diameters stand out at various heights spreading LED light on the ceiling, harmoniously, reminding the album cover with its LED buttons. The black lacquered metal shelves spread the light on the wall, emphasizing the material texture of the painting. The kitchen is minimal, essential, with the graft of the table that seems to float thanks to the light and elegant support of the glass leg. Everything is played on the tones of white and black, recalling the piano keyboard and the creative impulse that, when it is so strong, does not allow nuances.

This was a monumental achievement and was made possible by our timely collaboration with the client and the organizational skills of our gifted project manager, Vittorio Castelli. The project pictures clearly reflect the attention to detail and careful material selection that went into the building of this lovely home. Our client had specific ideas about what she wanted to use for the many finished services pictured in this section. We collaborated with her in the pre-production phase, visiting many local retailers and suppliers in an effort to obtain exactly the look that she wanted. The sculpted hardwood floors, custom cabinetry, countertops, tile surfaces, and lighting clearly demonstrate her well-considered choices.

RITMONIO
The private house of a collector in Milan, where the environments stand out with a strong personality: this is the result obtained thanks to the project of Arch. Giovanni Musica, from MGAlab Architettura firm. The contamination between contemporary style and objects coming from the different trips of the private client is very successful. In the interior spaces, the sobriety of warm tones and natural colors of the earth combines perfectly with brighter colors, further enhancing the environment around them. This is the case of the two bathrooms, where the color is the main star. In the first bathroom the favourite colour of the client has been chosen: red, that can be found on the radiator, in the accessories, in the lamp, and even in the flexible hose, where the Feelgood series by Ritmonio contributes to create a coordinated shower area and a daring bathroom environment. The taps are from the Haptic series with the Concrete handle. In the second bathroom, the iconic series Diametro 35 by Ritmonio, has been chosen for great combinations and design. Once again, Ritmonio’s products stand out for being polyhedric and versatile, suitable for people who are looking for great design that lasts over time.

The original kitchen in this home had a cramped galley style kitchen with a poor work flow. The original cabinetry was dark and outdated. By removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, we were able to obtain the open concept the clients were hoping for.
With the addition of a kitchen island, we managed to salvage the same amount of kitchen storage after demolishing a wall of cabinets while adding some additional seating for kitchen entertaining and breakfast on the go. The built-in appliance wall creates a seamless path of travel from the kitchen to the laundry room. The dining room was also severely cramped and featured floral wallpaper and felt disconnected from the kitchen. The walls along both sides of the dining room were removed to open it up to the kitchen and living area. Our design team opted to accent the dining area with a gorgeous brass chandelier that plays off of the brass fixtures in the kitchen. A custom bench seat using the same cabinets used in the kitchen creates a sense of cohesion throughout the new open plan. Those same cabinets were also carried into the living room to frame the fireplace.
