Nothing works as well in a shade garden as bamboo to provide an instantaneous effect of lushness, height, and a Zen-like, tropical feel. Bamboo is extremely versatile and can tolerate conditions ranging from full sun to full shade. It also does really well in containers, which keep the roots contained and the plants in check. In this garden, we've softened a monolithic looking black metal wall through the use of a row of bamboo planters, a red Japanese maple, and clustered container plantings in Asian ceramic pots. This rooftop garden is located on Manhattan's Upper West Side near the Hudson River. Read more about this garden on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

A contemporary NYC rooftop garden featuring black fiberglass planters filled with sky pencil hollies, Knockout roses, and rose of sharon. For a bit of contrast, we’ve also added red Japanese maples in burgundy Asian ceramic pots. The pots are topped with black polished river stones that help to camouflage the irrigation and up-lighting lines that run throughout all the planters. Blue ceramic pots and a matching blue tile backsplash bring a touch of the Mediterranean to this rooftop terrace in the heart of New York City. This Park Avenue residence actually features three separate rooftop terraces. One terrace is made for entertaining and features a built-in fireplace, inset jacuzzi, bluestone patio, custom-built wood planters, an outdoor kitchen, and ceramic pots filled with boxwoods and flowers. The upstairs terrace feels like a private oasis surrounded by lush birch trees and roses that soften the view on all sides. Another smaller terrace off the master bedroom is charmingly intimate and features a mix of serene evergreens and comfortable lounge chairs. This custom roof deck in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood features lightweight aluminum decking, ipe planters, an ipe and metal pergola, and ipe benches with built-in storage under the seats. Few woods can match the natural beauty of ipe (pronounced ee-pey), a hardwood with a 30-year life expectancy. These pictures were taken in early spring, before the leaves have filled out on the trees. Plantings include coralbark maples, hornbeams, pink cherry trees, crape myrtles, and feather grasses. The planters include LED up-lighting and automated drip irrigation lines. Read more about our projects on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

The client wanted to use this terrace for entertainment. All we needed was a proper layout, lighting, make it fun and functional. Budget was a question so we avoided any contracting work, mixed affordable and expensive items. The outdoor barbecue existed, so I added in a firepit table, RGB led lighted planters and cube stools, purchased aluminum planters from CB2 and had it painted in red (the client likes warm colors), outdoor furnitures from CB2 and voila !! Oh of course let's not forget the pillows and throw.
