“We picked Buildplan because I really didn’t want our renovation to be a huge burden on my time, but I was wary of some of the full-service firms we got estimates from. The estimates from design-build firms were all over the place in terms of price and didn’t match up to the estimates I was getting from independent contractors. They seemed like a great alternative to traditional design-build. With Buildplan I was able to get competitive bids that I could make sense of without all the legwork. We valued the transparency throughout the process and I never had to worry that we weren’t getting a fair price. I was happy with the entire process and would highly recommend them to anyone who doesn’t have the time to manage the project themselves but still wants to know that they are getting a fair price. . . not to mention that our kitchen looks absolutely amazing! We had a great experience all around from design through to construction. We decided to move out of our one bedroom while the renovation was taking place. After being advised to expect delays from friends who had done renovations (not with Buildplan) I was pleasantly surprised that we were able to move back in when scheduled.”

Although our project was not a large one, the owner Marc took personal interest in making sure we were happy with all aspects of the work. We recommend Lasley Brahaney highly, and will definitely use them again if we have future construction projects.”

“MacMorris Construction Group has completed several projects for us. They are always clean and tidy, making sure to leave a safe and neat worksite overnight. They come when scheduled and remain on schedule. We have used them to redo a bathroom, put up a porch roof, and most recently they completed a large kitchen renovation with an extension. They have taken care of all tiling, subcontract out with trusted workmen for electrical and plumbing work, and have many other professionals with whom they have established relationships (such as building engineers) that they can call for help. They troubleshoot as the project is underway to make sure that we as the customer get the best quality results. I cannot recommend them enough.”

“UPDATE: Since I wrote this review last, I received a response from Gandalf Restorations owner, Alex, who was helpful in getting the issue resolved and cover the cost for the repair of the small chip in the stone. All's well that ultimately ends well! __________________________________________________________________________ We got our kitchen remodeled two years back through Gandolf Restorations. We originally chose them for their professionalism that they showed at the time of presentation. They also had a warranty for their service. Two years later my kitchen counter stone has a chip in it and inspite of approaching and respectfully writing to them more than half a dozen times the owner, Alex, has not responded after his first response. They do an ok job but needed to be micromanaged to get best results. I would not recommend Gandolf or any other business who does not stand behind their work! This is a tiny chip that could be easily filled and they could've saved their company's reputation but it's unacceptable to be non-responsive in a service based business.”

“I live in Manhattan and have a country house in the Catskills upstate. The house is a contemporary design built in the mid 1970's. The "bones" were great but the aesthetic was completely wrong. We had Kimberly redesign the interior of the entire house - from moving electrical work, plumbing, windows and walls to choosing finishes and fixtures. She is amazing and I have referred her to many friends and clients. Next.... the apartment.”

“I am a builder who works with many architects on a yearly basis, but whenever I am asked for a recommendation I seem to always refer Jeff of JMKA. Jeff Kaufman has an excellent eye for architecture and always seems to come up with a very functional but unique design. I have done several projects with Jeff and I see the projects full circle. From the initial client meeting to design, bidding, project management, to completion. In the initial meeting with the client Jeff will walk around the existing house listening to the clients expectations, just taking it all in, and then CLICK! It amazes me when Jeff starts explaining his vision and sketching out his ideas of the design which is not exactly what the homeowner was envisioning, it's better. Just about every time you hear from the client "huh I would have never thought of doing it that way but I love it!" That ability to tune in to the wants and needs of a client while still keeping the architectural integrity to the overall project, I think is the definition of a good architect, and why I will continue to refer Jeff Kaufman. “My husband and I are absolutely thrilled with the work performed by John Patrick. He went above and beyond to ensure that our vision and goals were captured in the final design. We know that when we finally move into our renovated home, we will enjoy it that much more because we worked with John. We bought a1930s colonial - our first home - and while we knew that something needed to be done to it, we couldn't figure out exactly what. John Patrick is a highly trained and skilled designer, who helped us realize ideas about our space that we didn't see before. Not only did he come up with beautiful and practical solutions to the problems we saw in the home, he willingly worked within the existing constraints of the space, i.e., the location of plumbing, load-bearing walls, etc. We held frequent check-points during our design phase. During each one, John Patrick was thoughtful and professional. We never felt embarrassed or uncomfortable bringing our ideas to the table. He was always very tactful in explaining which ideas made sense and which could be reconsidered in order to maximize space and functionality. We wanted to work with an architect who would share his professional expertise, and not simply sketch whatever we asked him to. John is definitely that architect. And yet, when there were personal elements that my husband and I were unwilling to bend on - no matter how impractical - John found a way to make them work. After each check-point, John created great drawings that helped us visualize the space. These were invaluable for two business professionals trying to make design choices with no design experience. Once our designs were final, John even produced renderings that helped us select fixtures and furniture to fit in our space. These renderings alone have received glowing compliments from all our friends and colleagues. The renderings were also very impressive to our contractor, who is overseeing the construction of our home, as were the construction documents that John produced. The construction documents helped us during the bid phase, when we were trying to select a contractor, and have served as the “source of truth” during the construction phase. We absolutely recommend working with John Patrick Cunningham. You will be happy you did!”
