C-Starr Construction

I contracted this company to build a patio on Nov. 21, 2016. They required half down at signing. Half down was over $35,000. They had 8 weeks to start. As of Feb. 13, 2017, 4 weeks late, they had not begun work. They refused to answer my phone calls, emails, and text messages. On Feb. 13, 2017 I notified them I wanted to cancel the contract. They refuse to give my money back. This company is run by thieves. Do not hire them.

Cstarr construction was positive about getting a quote and making appointments to pick out material. I loved their design ideas and initial motivation and energy. They were also good about answering the phone and making sure that there was a person to communicate with, however, the communication, as with most projects, seemed to be lacking throughout the process. Their employee, Blake, did not write anything down, so as a result the project manager had no idea what was needed for the project. I would advise anyone dealing with them to get a complete list of all materials being used and project details before giving a down payment. The contract (remodeling two bathrooms) was signed in July, work started in October, and wasn’t finished until January. The owner also hassled me (called me multiple times in one evening, getting Blake to call and text me) to pay him more near the end of the project (citing he didn’t have any money to pay his workers before Christmas), even though it wasn’t complete. They require half of the estimate up front, industry standard used to be 1/3. There was no urgency in getting anything complete on this project until the last 4-6 weeks. We had one set-back with a foundation issue, but it could not be done until they were done with the plumbing and that took about a week to figure out. Things that put them way behind: their plumber failed the inspection four different times, tile was back-ordered, but also wasn’t ordered until later in the project, the wrong cabinets were ordered for one of the bathrooms and had to be reordered (6 weeks), guys working on the project took their time on absolutely everything. The bathrooms look okay, but they aren’t at the level for the money that was paid. The tile is uneven in many places, and this was white subway tile, the glass accent tile that takes a little more experience is uneven as well. Sanded grout was used with the subway tile when it should have been non-sanded. It was also used on the glass accent tile. No bullnose tile was used on the subway tile, so it just kind of ends. Grout was left on a lot of tile and not wiped away, and there is discoloration from where it was wiped with too much water. The bench in the shower was not supposed to be smooth, but slightly rough like the floor was done. I’m also not sure why they put the accent tile in the middle of the fixture and didn’t go down one more set of tiles. I also wanted to tile the ceilings in the showers, but it never got done and I definitely did not want to add to the project. Part of the bathroom cabinet trim is missing at the bottom. After the project was done I also had to hire a plumber because their workers used the master bathroom toilet and flushed paper towels and baby wipes down it and clogged the toilet. I called them to have them come out and fix stuff and was told the project manager would be there on Tuesday. Called on Tuesday to find out he had left the company, owner told me he would get back to me, it’s been months and I haven’t heard anything. I let it go because after 6 months you just get tired of dealing with the back and forth. Like I said, the job was not horrible, but for the money, it should have been much better. It’s hard to find good people these days.

I cannot say enough good things about this contractor. C-Starr construction exceeded all of my expectations. Kyle and his team under promised and over delivered. From the start, he told me a realistic time line of when he could remodel both of my bathrooms, 6 - 8 weeks. 6 weeks later, his team was in my home and a week later all work was complete. Reliable, respectful, clean and very good quality. They also did electrical work and were able to rewire a light switch that another contractor said wasn't possible. I trusted these people in my home when I wasn't there and with my garage code. New carpets were covered with drop clothes and all work was wiped down after. Also worth noting, Kyle has a great eye for design. I knew a general style I liked and he presented me with choices that hit the mark. He really made it so easy for me. Everything was kept in budget and there were no hidden or add on fees.
