What is DG?

Irisgal, DG is decomposed granite.

I don't know if you can, but I wouldn't since the stones may shift. There are plants which around here grow OK in decomposed granite such as wooly thyme.

How about just sprinkling some Creeping Thyme seed over the area. Thyme will flourish in the DG and you won't need to do so much work.

Thank you all so much. I really appreciate all your ideas. I had not thought of the seed idea. That would definitely be a lot less work.

I'm not sure why you even want to do this. I am thinking you may be opening the area up for weeds....that just more work.

And you have to WATER between the flagstones....

We have plants between our flagstones and I wish we had put gravel instead. I've tried numerous types of plants/ground covers and nothing so far has worked really well. It is hard to keep watered, weeds proliferate, some plants will grow for a while and then die out. Thyme does well but some of it gets taller than what I want. It is high maintenance and if I had to do it over I wouldn't.
