Viennetta - Anyone grow it in zone 5?

I saw this one listed in another thread. The database says zone 6 - 9 but wondering if anyone in zones 5 or lower have had success with growing it outdoors? One site that sells it says 4 - 9 but that could be a standard sales line for any plants they sell.

We are a zone 5/6 here so not sure if this would be a wise investment.

Julia, check out the "Which Clematis Are You Looking Forward To?" thread ... I've posted there of how I'm able to have success with 'Vienetta' in zone 3.

Of course, finding one is harder than one would expect.

Maybe suppliers monitor the site....

I found it on Joy Creek (?) website but at $30. I'm hesitant given the stated zone requirements. JC website, said to grow it in zones 8-9.

I noticed when I was browsing their web site that Joy Creek has Viennetta listed as available in March.

I'm in the same zone as you (5/6) and have never had a large-flowerd, C. florida-based clematis (like Viennetta) survive more than 4 winters in the ground. Those hybrids that cross C. florida with C. integrifolia or C. viticella do very well, however.

I would guess Viennetta does not have good long-term survival prospects for your zone, unless you are on the southern edge or have a warm, southern nook to keep it in. It would be delightful in a large pot, though, that is kept protected in a garage!
