I would guess without a picture that it was apple mint. The leaves are softer, more rounded than most mints which are pointed, and can be slightly fuzzy. They also can get larger, both leaf and plant. I wouldn't go so far to say they're as fuzzy as lamb's ear, but they are soft, and it's sometimes called wooly mint.

Apple Mint is also my favorite for my iced tea, because of the mild fruity flavor. I've also made a killer apple mint vanilla ice cream. It has a great flavor, without the overpowering astringency of spearmint or peppermint.

That looks like it. I don't have a photo. It is very nice in tea. I want to get some and plant it. I never heard of it. Is it a popular mint?

any garden centre should stock it it probably the first mint to come in that and garden mint

I agree--a decent greenhouse should have it. I'm in Denver metro, where I can get 20-25 different mints between the three garden centers that I tend to shop, so I can't say how popular it is away from here. But I've had it before moving to here, so it should be findable.

There's also a varietal called Kentucky Colonel that's a cross between spearmint and apple mint that has a nice flavor, but more assertive than plain apple mint.
