Is there a place to go in Portland for inexpensive trees???

Can anyone recommend a good place in Portland to buy some inexpensive trees? My next door neighbor is re-doing her yard and we also have some other neighbors that lost some privacy trees during the storms. I do not know if they want ornamental or evergreen.

I wouldn't mind knowing myself!! (Though I am more for fruit trees!)

Loen's Nursery is having a sale. Sometimes you can go to their wholesale division on Saturday mornings and shop. Their retail side is nice. Wholesale = botanical names only.

Look on craigslist and type in "trees" in the for sale section. Lots of nurseries liquidating.

Now is a good time to buy because there's been just enough rain and cool enough that the trees are not suffering from thirst.

Trees are $35-$75. Pretty close to wholesale, AND they plant them for you. Of course, you have to volunteer for them. All for a good cause...

And yes, craigslist for wholesale trees.

Always inspect for quality and pay only for healthy stock. Starved, blighted, rootbound etc. specimens do not amount to good value. A plant in poor condition at planting time may continue to dwindle away and eventually die rather than bounce back. Installation of a diseased plant may result in pathogens infesting the planting site.

In addition to the ubiquitous deformed (bound, kinked, j-rooted...) roots pandemic even among otherwise healthy nursery stock root rot is common here, as is foliage mildew of rhododendrons. Many retail lots are operated by people loathe to spend any money on upkeep; I am sure they would love to not even have to water if they could get away with it - and places like Home Depot (and too many independent operators) actually sometimes appear to be making the attempt.

Hi.

Have your neighbors (and/or you!) check out native plant sales offered through Multnomah and other nearby counties. I bought several vine maples, huckleberry bushes, birch trees and other native material at a sale sponsored by Snohomish County. A link is provided below.

The plants are small and are priced accordingly -- like a couple of dollars each. An immediate privacy hedge they will not make, but give them a few years....

This is not Portland but nearby Vancouver. I went to this sale last year and it is mobbed, lots of trees sold very inexpensively, some 6' or more. They have both fruit trees and ornamental, I saw some nice weeping cherries last year.
