Agave cuttings

I have 15 very large Agaves or Century Plants. I want to cut them off across the stems (which are quite sturdy) and pot them up, hoping that the stems or roots will shoot up again.

I have searched the internet but found conflicting advice. Some sites say it can't be done, that only offsets may be cut off; others say they are guaranteed to strike.

Has anybody had any experience doing this and did the parent plant shoot up again?

I'll appreciate any advice you can give.
