No, most ranges don't have this and it is not a law. Please name names so people with frequent power outages know what to avoid.

My previous Kenmore Elite range would disable gas flow without power. I believe it was a GE sourced range.

Ah yes, all the Maytag Gemini based ranges including that KA will shut off the top burners when there is no power. I don't think there are any others though.

As Hvtech says, It is not a law. Nor a regulation nor a new industry standard. It is just somebody's idea of a "feature" that is "offered" on a few models of ranges.

Seems to me that we had numbers of threads on this topic about three years ago following the "snowmageddon" and Superstorm Sandy. The complaints I recall were about: (a) the double oven models from Whirlpool (such as the Maytag Gemini models and the above cited double-oven Kitchenaid), (b) some (not all) of the higher end gas and dual-fuel Electrolux models; and (c) some of the Kenmore-branded stoves (which I thought came from Electrolux/Frigidiare rather than GE, but I could be wrong on that.) Seems to me that there also was some question about the American Range brand of pro-style stoves. too, because of statements in the manual about not operating the ranges during power outages.

If you want to research those threads, try the following search string: gardenweb + appliances + outage + gas.

Anyway, there's an easy way to find out beforehand if a particular model of range "offers" this supposed "feature." Check out the online owner's manual. They are available in pdf so you can use the word search function to look for "power" and/or "outage" in the text. In most owner's manuals for gas and DF range models, that search will take you to the instructions for lighting the burners manually. If you don't find any such passage, then you know the stove is one of the few models that is designed to prevent you from using the stovetop during power outages.
