Need advice on distance between kitchen island and cooktop

Our architects have designed our new kitchen with the island being 6 feet away from the range. Doesn't this seem a little far? We currently have 5 feet distance between our island and range. Is there an industry standard that maximizes efficiency of movement? I don't necessarily want to be carrying heavy/hot pots any further than I need to.

I think 6 is greater than you need. Anything from 4'-0" to 5-0" is great. You do not want to take more than two steps between the areas if possible.

39" is the bare minimum (1000mm) that I would say - 6' is a bit too far - I assume it's a really big room - could you have a bigger island ?!?!

really? hmmm I just turn and open the large drawer in my island to get the tools I need for cooking without taking a step..i also have a potato bin (yes, really) and shelves for pots and pans. my island is small, but it's mine!!
oh and I have an antique bottle opener that came with my house!

Thanks everyone. I completely agree. I think that's the difference between an architect and a true kitchen designer -- the latter would have advised a more practical distance between island and cooktop. The plans are drawn up, but nothing has been ordered or installed. I think I will literally just move the island 1' closer to the range!

I start with 42"-45" between island and perimeter cabinets and then consider appliances. I like to leave at last 24" of walk by space when an appliance door is open...DW, refrigerator, oven particularly when there is more than one person working in the work area.

oh oh italgal7!! :) you're on thin ice there!! :) kind of like saying "Voldemort" outloud!! :) my father is an architect and I grew up in the house he designed, but the kitchen was practical, sorry :)

The NKBA guidelines advises a minimum of 48" for a two person work aisle. You are right-- 6' is crazy.
